1 Depart Australia
2 Arrive Cairo - Giza
Welcome to Cairo, the sprawling capital of Egypt and the largest city in Africa. This evening we'll enjoy a group welcome dinner in Giza. (D)
3 Giza
Our touring in Egypt begins at the oldest structures in existence, the amazing Great Pyramids of Giza. We'll visit the nearby Great Sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head of a king, often referred to as the national symbol of Egypt. We'll also discover the ancient capital of Memphis and the Step Pyramid of Sakkara, believed to have been designed by the vizier of King Zoser, Imhotep. (B)
4 Giza - Alexandria
After breakfast we travel to Wadi el Natroun, home to some of the world's earliest Christian monasteries. Originally there were 50 monasteries here but only four have survived to modern times. Special Experiences: In the Nitrian Desert visit the self-sufficient Coptic Monastery of St Bishoy, the ‘Star of the Desert'. Born in 320 AD/ St Bishoy's body is said to be preserved to this day inside the monastery. Later we'll continue to the city of Alexandria on Egypt's north coast. (B/L)
5 Alexandria
Today we explore Alexandria. Highlights include the National Museum, Pompey's Pillar, the Catacombs, the New Bibliotheca and the Montazah Palace. Our last stop for a photo at the Citadel of Qaitbay, a spectacular 15th century fortress overlooking the Mediterranean. (B/L)
6 Alexandria - El Alamein - Cairo
Our journey takes us westward through the dunes along the Mediterranean coast, following the route of Field Marshal Montgomery to El Alamein. (B) Special Experiences: We visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery associated with the Battle of El Alamein.
7 Cairo
Today begins with a visit to the 12th century Saladin Citadel of Cairo and the Mohammed Ali Mosque. We'll then discover the 14th century souk, Khan el-Khalili Bazaar. Famous for its handmade crafts, it's also the perfect place to enjoy a traditional Arabic coffee. This afternoon we'll continue into the lively heart of Cairo to visit the world-famous Egyptian Museum, home to Tutankhamun's priceless treasures and many other historic artefacts. (B)
8 Cairo - Luxor
This morning we fly to Luxor in Upper Egypt. Here we'll explore the fascinating Karnak Temple, dedicated to the Pharaoh Amun. Approximately 30 pharaohs contributed to the temple's structure over time, which explains its monumental size! We'll then visit Luxor Temple, once connected to Karnak Temple by a 3-kilometre-long Avenue of Sphinxes. Luxor Temple is also home to a 25-metre pink granite obelisk, which was part of a matching pair until the 1830s when one was given to France. It now stands in the centre of the Place de la Concorde in Paris. (B)
9 Luxor - Nile Cruise
Our first stop today is the Valley of the Kings. Carved deep into the limestone rock, each tomb has a similar pattern of three corridors, an antechamber and a sarcophagus chamber. We'll be able to descend into some of the tombs to see examples of the elaborate and incredibly well-preserved hieroglyphic paintings. Our next destination is the Temple of Hatshepsut. Queen Hatshepsut was one of only a few women to be given the title of pharaoh. We'll then visit the Colossi of Memnon. (B/L/D) Embark Cruise: This afternoon we board our Nile River cruise ship.
10 Nile Cruise
We set sail for Edfu this morning, crossing the lock at Esna and continuing south. (B/L/D)
11 Nile Cruise
This morning we visit the magnificent Temple of Horus, dedicated to the Falcon God. This beautiful ancient temple is one of the best-preserved in Egypt and the second-largest after Karnak Temple. We'll then cruise to the riverside Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, before continuing to Aswan this evening. Tonight we enjoy a traditional galabeya party on board. (B/L/D)
12 Nile Cruise
Special Experiences: An early start this morning to cross the desert. Our destination is the incredible twin temples of Abu Simbel. The temples were originally carved out of the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BC, as a monument to himself and his queen, Nefertari.(B/L/D)
13 Nile Cruise - Aswan
Disembark Cruise: We disembark the cruise. This morning we'll explore Aswan. Highlights of our sightseeing include the High Dam, the picturesque Temple of Isis on Philae Island, and the Unfinished Obelisk. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. (B)
14 Aswan
Enjoy the day at leisure to explore this sunny and relaxed city at your own pace and discover its distinctive African atmosphere. (B)
15 Aswan - Cairo
This morning we'll transfer to the airport for our flight back to Cairo. Tonight we'll enjoy a group farewell dinner. (B/D)
16 Depart Cairo
Today we bid farewell to Egypt and begin our journey home. (B)

I booked my Bunnik tour (Egypt in Depth) through Global Journeys. The process was clear, simple and reassuringly efficient. I had always wanted to visit Egypt and the trip was everything that I could hope for.
I visited in March - April and the weather was warm and sunny each day but cool in the early mornings and evenings. The tour guide made the trip; he was so knowledgeable and organised. The itinerary covered all the highlights of Egypt, accommodation was wonderful,...read more
