Overview

Book online and enjoy exclusive savings on APT's 13 Day East Coast Discovery. Cruise 12 nights along the east coast of Australia from Sydney to Hobart aboard the small expedition ship, MS Caledonian Sky. Stopping in the ports of Newcastle, Batemans Bay, Wilson Promontory, Flinders Island and Coles Bay just to name a few.

Itinerary

You'll be met on arrival at Sydney airport today and transferred to your expedition ship. This evening, get to know your fellow guests at a welcome dinner and briefing with your expedition team. Stay 12 Nights: MS Caledonian Sky (D)

Arrive in Newcastle, gateway to the Hunter Valley. Watch as the city fades before a landscape of lush vineyards, as you head for one of Australia's oldest wine producing areas. Taste the fruits of a quality Hunter Valley harvest this afternoon, at one of the region's renowned cellar doors. Afterwards, set out on your selected sightseeing option. (B/L/D)

Freedom of Choice:
  • Embark on a guided tour around Newcastle, taking in the Christ Church Cathedral, the Newcastle Civic Centre and more. Alternatively, walk to Nobby's Headland and see its lighthouse, which has been in operation for over 150 years.

Cruise the calm waters of the Hawkesbury River today, drifting by rugged sandstone cliffs and isolated inlets. The Hawkesbury starts at the confluence of the Nepean and Grose Rivers and flows 120 kilometres east to Broken Bay. This part of our voyage begins at the river's tidal mouth, where you will have the opportunity to climb aboard Zodiacs, getting up close to the tree-lined shores of the region's historic towns. (B/L/D)

Cruise along the Clyde River today, and into Batemans Bay, in the heart of the Oyster Coast. Visit the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden, where an abundance of native plants has been seamlessly cultivated. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife, including kangaroos, reptiles and birds, which make their home in the surrounding forest. (B/L/D)

Our small ship hugs the coast before arriving in the port of Eden this morning. At Ben Boyd National Park, set out on a choice of walks along the rocky coastline. Several of the park's lookouts boast views over the Pacific Ocean; you may be lucky enough to see migrating humpback whales from here. With some free time in Eden, perhaps visit the Killer Whale Museum or try some of the region's famous oysters. (B/L/D)

Reach the Gippsland region of Victoria today. Affectionately known as ‘the Prom', Wilsons Promontory is mainland Australia's southernmost national park. This remote region is blessed with both rugged wilderness and white sandy beaches. Jump aboard a Zodiac and make your way to shore, where our onboard naturalists will lead us in a series of nature walks. (B/L/D)

The largest of the Furneaux Group of islands, Flinders Island makes for an idyllic stop on our way to the Tasmanian mainland. There are many bushwalking opportunities on the island, including along the Strzelecki Peaks, which offer incredible views of Bass Strait. (B/L/D)

Our small ship docks in Burnie today, and we board a coach to Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Take in the rugged natural beauty of the mountain and its surrounds, before setting out to discover the tranquil Dove Lake. (B/L/D)

This morning, visit the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre. The interactive exhibitions here tell the history of Beaconsfield and the Tamar Valley. After lunch on board our ship, explore the Tamar Valley, enjoying a Signature Experience along the way. (B/L/D)

Signature Experiences:
  • Take a journey along the spectacular Tamar Valley wine route, stopping for tastings at Pipers Brook Vineyard and Jansz Tasmania, two of Australia's leading producers of sparkling wine.

Cruising down Tasmania's east coast, we arrive at Coles Bay. From here, we will explore Freycinet National Park and its surrounding areas. The combination of Freycinet's pink-hued granite mountains and its white sandy beaches have long inspired naturalists, writers and artists. Admire the stunning coastal scenery of Wineglass Bay and Cape Tourville. (B/L/D)

Today, watch out for seals and dolphins in the crystal-clear waters surrounding Maria Island. Uninhabited, apart from its park rangers, the World Heritage-listed island boasts pristine beaches, as well as an abundance of endemic birdlife, wombats and kangaroos. While exploring the island, we also learn about its history as a former convict site. (B/L/D)

Rounding the south-east coast of Tasmania, we arrive at Bruny Island. Here, Adventure Bay offers us a range of hiking options, which take in rugged coastal views, as well as the soaring blue gums beyond the shoreline. Afterwards, reach the Truganini Lookout for spectacular panoramas of the Tasman Sea and Simpsons Bay, then enjoy a tasting at Bruny Island Cheese and Beer Co. (B/L/D)

Arriving in Hobart, disembark your ship for the final time and transfer to the airport. (B)
