Itinerary

Arrive into the Georgian capital and this evening join your Resident Tour Director and fellow travellers for a drink and briefing on the adventure ahead. Stay: Tbilisi Marriott Hotel

Tbilisi is a surprising blend of cultures. Your adventure starts with a walk through the cobbled streets of the atmospheric old town. Visit the 12th century Metekhi Church and a 19th century Jewish synagogue. Admire the old Georgian houses with their distinctive wooden, curved balconies and the Sioni Cathedral. You'll see the oldest surviving church in Tbilisi before getting a bird's-eye view of the city from the Narikala Fortress, which can be accessed by cable car or on foot.

After lunch, visit the National Museum of Fine Arts. Tonight is a chance to savour some of Georgia's finest cuisine at a favourite traditional restaurant accompanied by a private polyphonic ensemble performance. Stay: Tbilisi Marriott Hotel (B/L/D)

Visit the Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia with its extraordinary collection of gold filigree work. Continue to the Georgian National Centre of manuscripts for a private visit with a specialist to talk about important restoration work. Time during the day to visit the Sukhoi Bridge open air market.

This afternoon, you can choose to partake in one of these Design Your Day activities:

  • An Artisan Introduction to the Ancient Technique of Cloisonné (decorative enamelwork). Immerse yourself in the incredible artistic traditions of Georgian Cloisonné enamel during a private workshop. Visit a local artisan at work, and observe the creative process behind minankari Cloissone enamel before trying your hand at this traditional skill. Learn the history of Georgian art as you create a memorable keepsake to take home.
  • Join an Architectural Expert for a City Walking Tour. From the uneven balconies of Avlabari, or the freshly-painted, ornate latticework of Abanotubani, Tbilisi's fine architectural details are best appreciated on a guided tour with a local architectural expert to add insight and depth to your explorations. Stroll through Sololaki, once the district of rich merchants and artists and see the authentic Tbilisi.
  • Visit Tbilisi Sulfur Baths. A cluster of historic bathhouses built on the famed hot springs that gave the Georgian capital its name, Tbilisi translates to 'warm place'. The sulfuric water is not only gloriously warm it is also supposedly therapeutic and a relaxing experience. Here you will experience a scrub treatment and then offered tea and jam.

Your evening is at leisure. Stay: Tbilisi Marriott Hotel (B/L)

Explore the most picturesque part of Georgia — Kakheti, which borders the Great Caucasus range.
