In every corner of the world lies something new to discover. And with new, comes the unknown. Exciting? Yes. Scary. Absolutely! Especially when you are a young traveller going it alone.

Whether it is your first trip, or you’ve got a passport full of stamps, taking a guided tour with other young travellers is a great way to see the world. You get all the benefits of a guided tour, including security, value for money, and access to experiences that are hard to stumble upon by yourself, but you also have the flexibility and independence of enjoying a solo holiday.

On tour all the logistics are taken care of to get you from A to B, your accommodation is sorted, and there are activities that you can join in on should you choose. Or if you prefer, you can bypass the escorted activities and explore on your own. Chances are some of your newfound friends will share some of your interests, so if you want some company, you won’t have to look far for some kindred spirits to join you as you live out your dream holiday. All the best bits of travelling solo, without being alone!

Worried you’ll feel left out? Don’t! Solos make up over half of most tours for young travellers, so it is a really great dynamic on tour. You can share a room with another same-sex traveller, or travellers, depending on your trip style and the accommodation used on tour. Doing so means you won’t have to pay any single supplements and it works out more economical than paying your own way! However, if you want your own space, you can opt to upgrade to a private room on most tours.

Touring lets you see a country in a whole new way – not just as a ‘tourist’. You’ll often have local guides to let you in on the insights and break down barriers, and a tour leader always on hand to answer any questions and give you some tips and tricks along the way. Not sure what to wear to a temple? Can’t identify anything off the menu? Sick of researching where to visit, just to get overwhelmed and crumple in a heap on top of a stash of maps and an outdated guidebook (yep, that restaurant moved last year!)? You won’t have to worry about any of that – leave it to the experts!

There are a number of companies that offer youth tours; Contiki, Topdeck, Intrepid, and G Adventures. Each offers unique handcrafted itineraries to suit young travellers, and each has different travel styles on offer, so your interests and preferences will ultimately dictate which youth tour suits you. Whether your dream holiday is fast-paced or relaxing, whether you want to strap on dancing shoes or hiking boots, there is an itinerary to match. With so much on offer, no wonder so many young solo travellers are choosing to give group touring a go. Join them!
