“Value for money cruise with interesting itinerary”
Trip:    Trip Date: 24/08/2017    Overall Rating: 4/5
This was our sixth European River Cruise and whilst it met expectations in most areas it fell short in some areas and those were ones which we are important to us. In terms of the cabin, the catering, the friendliness of the crew, the on-board facilities and the routine on board, we found that Viking were on par with the other major operators we have cruised with.

The areas we were disappointed with were the on-board entertainment and the excursions. The on-board entertainment did not include a German folklore/music evening (the cruise was totally within Germany)until the last night of the cruise and many guests did not show up, presumably as they were preparing for departure the following day. There was also a glass blowing demonstration one evening which more of a souvenir/sales event than a cultural event.

The excursions contained too many hours of coach travel (particularly as it had extensions either end in Prague and Paris with several hours by road between ship and hotel). There was also no folklore night offered in advance by Viking in Prague and we booked our own only to find that on the day of our arrival in Prague a folklore evening was being offered by Viking. Also in Rudesheim the main attraction (for us) was the Musical Instrument Museum but not included in any tour offered by Viking, so we and several other passengers had to do our thing. On the other hand the tour to Heidelberg included a local lunch with a foreign student from the university (our student was from Sudan) which we found to be a pleasant change.

  “Viking Rhine River Cruise”
Trip:    Trip Date: 09/08/2017    Overall Rating: 5/5
This was one of our best holidays. Viking did a fantastic job from the time we were picked up at the airport until we were transported for our flights home. The staff were professional and very friendly. The ship was great (too much food!) Tours were well organised and guides very knowledgeable. Would certainly recommend to anyone that wants to get away and relax for a week or two and we are now looking at a cruise on another river.

“Very good ship, good personnel but average guide”
Trip:    Trip Date: 05/08/2017    Overall Rating: 5/5
Not international clientele, almost all American, land excursion guides are very stupid. Ship is modern and very comfortable, extremely good. Food is excellent. River smelt awful. Housekeeping is excellent. Some staff were not kind.

“Easy and relaxing luxurious cruise down the Danube”
Trip:    Trip Date: 11/06/2017    Overall Rating: 4/5
Beautiful scenery, great ship with excellent staff and great food. Good choice of shore excursions with very good guides. We really enjoyed meeting our fellow travellers, even though by nature we are not very outgoing. Most were Americans, with the rest British and Canadian, Surprisingly, we were the only Australians. We were expecting a lot of old people but most were about our age -- 60-something! It cost a lot, but it's worth doing at least once.

  “Magical Christmas market tour”
Trip:    Trip Date: 16/12/2016    Overall Rating: 2/5
Budapest beautiful city. Would recommend staying here for 1-2 nights before starting cruise. Book hotel close to Christmas markets and shopping street if travelling in December. Heaps of designer shopping than elsewhere in Europe. Extremely cold, sometimes below freezing so bring suitable clothing or buy great bear when you arrive. Wondrous city, Christmas lights and markets and excellent range of goods and Hungarian food in stalls. Danube rather drab at this time of year food, crew and entertainment onboard was excellent. No complaints about ship but would have liked more attention paid to the Christmas markets and shuttle buses provided to these venues. I would not do this cruise in winter if I wasn't interested in seeing the Christmas markets and decorations. Vienna, Linz and Passau lovely, interesting cities, would give Melk Abbey a miss if I went on this tour again and also possibly Bratislava. Not a lot to offer and too cold at Christmas.

  “Very relaxing holiday”

Viking cruises very comparable with other providers. Service, food & excursions all very good. Staterooms in some catergories far too small though.

  “Fantastic China with Viking”
Trip:    Trip Date: 19/11/2016    Overall Rating: 5/5
Global Journeys competitive prices made it possible for us to take yet another Viking River Cruise holiday, this time to China. As a person with a special diet I would have struggled to eat without the excellent help of Viking and our tour guide Eric. We started in Shanghai, had a 6 day river cruise on the Viking Emerald and ended up in Beijing. The total trip taking 13 days. This trip is full on and you get to see all the major sights. There is a lot of walking involved so you need good shoes. We had had enough of planes by the end as there were a lot of internal flights and sitting around at airports but it is the only way to cover the distances in such a short period of time. The boat portion was much more relaxing and sailing through the Gorge was spectacular. We would highly recommend this trip and any Viking Cruise. They are so well organised, everything is included, and nothing is too much trouble. Many thanks Yvonne for all your help with booking.

  “Best cruise EVER!”
Trip:    Trip Date: 25/09/2016    Overall Rating: 5/5
We have had a few holidays on cruise ships, but never again. The Viking river cruises are the best way to travel and see the world. Everything was thought out brilliantly. The tours were amazing with tour guides informative and thoughtful of everyone's needs. The cruise staff were so helpful and nothing was overlooked when it came to our needs and wants. I haven't stopped talking about how wonderful everything was. After travelling for a few weeks, to have down time on the boat was perfect. Thank you to Viking for a memorable holiday.

The river cruise aspect of this package cannot be faulted. The food and wine was excellent. The accommodation was very good, and we were at water line. The staff were amazing on board.

On the day of the northern hemisphere summer equinox, Viking Cruises officially christened their third ship, Viking Sky, during a public celebration in Tromsø, Norway. Located above the Arctic Circle on Norway’s northwest coast, Tromsø is a key port of call on Viking’s popular Into the Midnight Sun itinerary. Viking FAQ's

Some of the frequently asked questions Viking receive from their clients
What is the dress code onboard?

Dress is casual and comfortable, both on board and ashore. Because the weather can be unpredictable, it is best to bring layers. It is recommended that you have a sweater or light jacket for spring and summer, and a heavier jacket for chillier months. Rain can happen at any time, so a collapsible umbrella is a "must." You are likely to do a good deal of walking during shore excursions, so you will definitely want sturdy, comfortable walking shoes; but, since our ships are much smaller than ocean cruising vessels, you do not have to worry about too much walking on board.

There are no "formal nights" on board, but there is usually a Captain's Welcome Dinner and/or Farewell Dinner; on many itineraries, you will attend a concert, ballet performance or other dressier event. For these evenings, you might like to bring "dressy casual" wear.

Is there internet access on board? Are there computers, or should I bring my laptop?

For your convenience, most Viking ships have internet access. Our ships in Europe, Russia and Ukraine have free wi-fi, so you can bring your laptop and get online at any time. Alternatively, each ship has a few computers for guest use; there are desktop machines in Russia for use free of charge, and laptops in Europe that guests may use at no additional charge. Guests who bring laptops to Russia may wish to bring a LAN cable for use in their stateroom; this may work a bit better than the wireless LAN in rural areas along the river.

In China, there is an internet café with desktop stations for guest use free of charge. There is no onboard wireless network in China or Southeast Asia, so you will not be able to get internet service on your personal computer while on the ship, although you may be able to do so during hotel stays. The ships also offer shipwide wireless internet access for guests who bring their own computer. Please note that shipboard service may be unreliable during certain parts of the journey. The internet connection functions via cellular service or satellite, and there may be times when reception is not possible and/or when the connection is quite slow. For this reason, we recommend only checking and sending email. We do not recommend surfing the Web or downloading large files.

What is the electrical voltage in the stateroom?

Electricity on the ships is 220V. Our European ships have the German Schuko safety plug, which has two pins. In China the ships have a 3-pin blade safety plug; if you have an adapter with just the two slanted blades that will work fine. In Southeast Asia the ships use a two pin Europlug. Some of these plugs are grounded and some are not. For more details and pictures of the plugs, click below. Each stateroom will have one or two 115V razor plugs available, generally in the bathroom.

What forms of payment are accepted on the ship?

Items you purchase on board, together with any optional excursions you purchase, will be added to your shipboard account. You may settle your account in cash (local money, dollars or euros) or with a credit card (sorry, the ship is unable to accept travelers' checks). You can include gratuities for shipboard personnel to your shipboard account (except in Southeast Asia).

Will we be able to have laundry done on board?

Laundry service is available on board; unfortunately clothes cannot be dry cleaned.

Can you accommodate my dietary needs?

In most cases we can. Every meal has vegetarian options on the menu, and our chefs are able to prepare low-salt or gluten-free cuisine. If you require a liquid diet or strictly kosher foods, you may have your products shipped to your cruise ship and we will be more than happy to serve your special meals. Please be sure to make your requirements known when you make your reservation so we will be fully prepared when you begin your journey. Guests requiring special diets such as vegetarian, low salt, diabetic or low cholesterol meals must alert Viking River Cruises one month prior to departure and inform the Maitre d' when on board. The chefs will make reasonable efforts to accommodate these requests.

Are the ships non-smoking?

All Viking ship interiors and staterooms are nonsmoking. Each ship has an outdoor smoking area.

Is there fitness equipment on board?

Most Viking ships do not have fitness equipment; there is a small gym aboard Viking Century Sun and a few of our European vessels have exercycles. Our guests enjoy getting their exercise during each day's shore excursions. Some ships feature walk-around promenade decks, so guests can take a stroll or “power walk.”

When will we receive our final documents?

Travel documents or itinerary details will be issued approximately 3 weeks prior to departure. If you need to receive your documents sooner, Viking charges a $25 early processing fee. If you will be away from home or need your documents sent to a different location for any reason, please be sure that you let your Global Journeys Tour Consultant know where to send them.

Arrival & Departure Information

What happens when you arrive at your destination, including information on airport transfers with Viking

When you purchase your flights in conjunction with Viking River Cruises, airport transfers are included in your air cost, if your arrival and departure dates coincide with the first and the last day and destination of the river cruise itinerary. If guests arrivale and/or departure dates are different dates to these, then airport transfers are not included. Guests who are not arriving or departing to the destination on the first and the last date of the cruise/tour itinerary will have to make their own way to the hotel or vessel at their own expense. Passenger flight details must be given to Global Journeys 45 days prior to departure. Viking and Global Journeys will not be responsible for late arrivals or missed transfers due to delayed or cancelled flights, for missed cruise/trip days or for extra costs resulting from the foregoing.

Boarding Time

On turnaround day, the entire ship must be cleaned in preparation for your arrival. The facilities of the ship, including your cabin, will not be available before 4pm. We appreciate your understanding on this matter. Should you arrive early, you may leave your bags in the Reception area and take a walk into the city, or relax in the lounge.

Terms & Conditions

Yep, all the boring small print! We still recommend you read it though, as no one likes surprises!
