“Amsterdam to Budapest with Uniworld on River Empress ”
Trip:    Trip Date: 02/08/2017    Overall Rating: 5/5
Uniworld provided a worry free holiday that you can only imagine in your dreams. From the moment we boarded River Empress we were treated like knigs and queens. We arrived at the dock in Amsterdam dragging our luggage and a staff member walked towards us and took our bags and introduced us to the front office staff. We were then shown to our room and given the run down on how things worked in our room and told lunch was available in the dining room. We unpacked and went to the dining room for lunch and we knew immediately by the attention of the dining room staff we were in for an amazing trip. The personal attention never faltered and we were made feel as if we were the most important people in the world for the next 15 days. They said "if you are happy, we are happy".

We enjoyed every aspect of our cruise, all the ports and excursions. There were excursions and activities to suit all activity levels and interests. We wish we could have sailed forever, although our clothes would not have fitted for much longer as the food was such high quality and there was so much on offer. Breakfast and lunch was buffet style and dinner was sit down. Uniworld definitely exceeded all our expectations, don't hesitate, just book. Thank you to Georgie for organising this trip for us, I have never spoken to her but she has provided a wonderful service.

  “Excellent cruise”
Trip:    Trip Date: 02/08/2017    Overall Rating: 5/5
We only had 76 on our cruise, very comfortable and gave us a chance to chat with almost everyone. Rooms are not big but comfortable. Very clean. Captain and all the crew were very friendly. Cruise director excellent. Each evening you were briefed on the following days activities. Bar stay friendly and generous. Washers and dryers on board excellent. There was no need to put your hand in your pocket for any other expenses. Excursions well run. Food excellent.

Ports of call were all good and lively. Opportunity to go on organised bike tours and pick up the boat further up the river or short hikes and a bus would drive you to the boat. Hard pressed to find fault with itinerary. Marvellous cruise. Uniworld are an excellent river cruise line.

  “Relaxing journey in wine region”
Trip:    Trip Date: 18/06/2017    Overall Rating: 5/5
This was our second cruise with Uniworld. Like the first, on this cruise we felt like royalty - the staff were attentive and caring, the food was excellent and the organisation of the shore excursions was very good. As there were only 60 passengers on this cruise it felt very personal.

  “An insight into Russia”
Trip:    Trip Date: 12/06/2017    Overall Rating: 4/5
This is a cruise along several rivers system that have been united through flooding of vast areas of land to make it possible. It covers some sections where you could easily swim from bank to bank through to others, that for all intents and purposes, you are in vast lakes that the shores are not visible. As a means of exploring the two principle cities of Moscow and St Petersburg and the huge land mass and towns in between this trip is ideal. Certainly St Petesburg with its Hermitage museum and the various ornate churches and palaces is a highlight but to stand in Red Square and visit the Kremlin in Moscow with all its history and current political situation is something well worth experiencing.

The cruise itself was well organised with a very attentive and caring crew. The ship is Russian owned and managed, as are the ships run by other river cruise companies (e.g. Scenic, Viking) and all appear to be of similar design and follow each other on roughly the same itinerary. The stair ways on the ship were very steep and, in my view, pretty risky given the age profile of most Uniworld travelers. There was a lift available for those that did not want to navigate the stairs.

The food on board was pretty good but not at the standard that you would get on a Uniworld European cruise. The only included beer/wine drinks were with dinner, which was a bit of a surprise when we had to sign for a coffee we asked for on our arrival. Again this is a different from every other Uniworld trip we have been on. Also there was a lot of non included side trips which were not cheap.

One of the bigger issues was that the ship was moored well outside central Moscow and St Petersburg. The traffic conditions into both cities was very heavy with Moscow's being horrific. The bus rides into town was easily over an hour each way which made it very inconvenient and encouraged staying in the centre rather than returning to the ship for lunch. However due to the very wet and cold weather conditions this was not a very comfortable option. The metro was located close to the ship mooring and presented a better option to getting around for those that felt confident using it. However despite the slight negatives, this is a trip well worth undertaking. I am not too sure how you could experience a country like Russia without the comfort and guidance given by the cruise managers. However be wary of the weather, mid summer was freezing. Everyone said this was unusual but be prepared for the worst.

“River cruising at its finest through France”
Trip:    Trip Date: 09/04/2017    Overall Rating: 5/5
River cruise with Uniworld Boutique River Cruises through two different areas of France. The first cruise on River Royale through the Bordeaux wine region was beautiful. Our favourite part was a 'Go Active' locally guided bicycle ride to a vineyard, stopping on the way to learn more about the area and growing of grapes, tour of the wine production and wine tasting...then cycle back to the ship...lots of laughs. Also lunch at a beautiful Chateau and exploring the town of St Emilion. All great local guides.

The second cruise was on the SS Joie de Vivre. The newest ship in the Uniworld fleet. She is absolutely exquisite! Luxury cruising at its finest from the staterooms, beds, facilities and food but it's the staff that make it amazing, as on all Uniworld Cruises. The perfect balance of 5 star service with a smile, a laugh & genuine friendliness. Guest Ages ranged from 30 to 80, most being 50-60yrs. Lots of different nationalities made interesting conversation at each meal, as we sat with different guests each time. Our favourite part of this Paris to Normandy cruise was for me the visit to Monets Garden at Giverny. The Spring flowers were in full bloom mid-April and my husband played golf at Etretat. The most spectacular & challenging course he has ever played. On board our favourite was dinner at 'Cave du Vins' Cave of Wines where we donned chefs apron and hat and helped one of the ship's Chef prepare our 5 course dinner with paired wines. Only 10 guests, great fun and lots of laughs, delicious food! This was our 4th cruise with Uniworld and each one has been very different but exceptional.

Our booking with Global Journey's Hannah was fantastic. Very easy with all the information provided online and fast response to our emails and questions. We wouldn't hesitate in booking with them again. Thank you Hannah.

  “From North to South”
Trip:    Trip Date: 13/11/2016    Overall Rating: 4/5
We had undertaken a very enjoyable trip down the Mekong a few years ago so when this one came up with Uniworld we thought why not go again? It did not let us down. Two days in Hanoi was the appetizer followed by a flight to Siem Reap where the wonder of Angkor Wat and several other temples was the highlight. This is one place that carries the tag of a "must see". The trip from Siem Reap to our boat by bus was a very long affair but with the provision of food boxes and a few comfort stops along the way the scenery and commentary provided by our local guide made it enjoyable.

The boat itself was from the Pandaw company on lease to Uniworld. Although this boat did not have all the up to date bits found on more modern vessels it more than made up by the attentive caring nature of the crew where nothing was too big an issue. The food on board was first rate. I understand that for future trips another more modern boat will be leased, hopefully the crew is as good as what we had. The trip down the Mekong was great with daily stops to scramble up the river bank to visit local communities, temples markets ect. The trip concluded with two days in bustling Ho Chi Minh, which is an experience in itself. This was an excellent trip. The only down side was the very high temperatures and humidity which made getting around uncomfortable. It was just after the wet season so it was normal for the locals (good they said!). The upside was that mosquitoes were still a few weeks away. Overall a great trip well worth doing.

  “Lovely method to travel!”
Trip:    Trip Date: 26/09/2016    Overall Rating: 4/5
It was a very nice cruise & you could be as busy or sedate as you wish. There were plenty of options and the guides were excellent. There was a good mix of people & everyone was there for the same reason - having a nice leisurely holiday and visiting interesting places. We were fortunate enough to have good weather for the bulk of the trip. Uniworld could improve their visiting on board entertainment - one was pathetically bad, the rest very good. They could also improve their internet service! On board wifi was ok but the internet cafe computers were useless. The meals were very nice & the staff very accommodating. I've now traveled with both Avalon & Uniworld, and for value for money I would pick Avalon, but both were memorable, comfortable, & interesting. I'll river cruise again!

  “Truly a world heritage area”
Trip:    Trip Date: 18/08/2016    Overall Rating: 5/5
I was a little worried about embarking on this trip gathered several negative reviews written about it. All I can say about those, is that some people need to get a life. Yes it was not a Uniworld boat, it was leased from a Portuguese company, but so what? The service was first rate, the included tours were all excellent, the food was excellent and even the wi-fi worked which is more than can be said for some of the other European river cruises. The Douro river and its valley are truly magnificent. The scenery far exceeds what you experience on the Rhine and the beauty is that the boat only sails during the day and stops at night meaning you can actually see it all. It is truly a world heritage area that should be visited. The Queen Isabella is a great way to go. The only slight negative is that the QI is a little smaller than the other European boats and thereby cabins are also smaller but they are adequate. The dining room, particularly at dinner, needs some sort of acoustic dampening as it was difficult to have conversations due to the noise from the many discussions being had. Overall an excellent trip. Thanks to Hannah for pulling it all together, it all went very smoothly.

Uniworld FAQ's

Some of the frequently asked questions Uniworld receive from their clients

European River Cruise FAQ's

Which cruise itinerary is best for me?

A good choice for first-time river cruisers is a Danube River cruise, which offers an enjoyable "tasting menu" of many top cultural sites. A Rhine River cruise, with stunning scenery and dozens of castles, is another great option. Second- or third-timers may enjoy visiting Eastern Europe via a cruise along the Lower Danube. More experienced travelers seeking something new might consider the Douro River in Portugal or the Volga River in Russia.

Are three people per room allowed?

Triple bookings are allowed only in some suites onboard the S.S. Catherine and the S.S. Maria Theresa (excluding the Royal Suite).

What should I wear on my cruise?

It's best to pack for a range of weather conditions, depending on the season and regions visited. Wearing layers will allow you to easily adjust to temperature changes. Limiting your wardrobe to a simple mix-and-match color scheme will keep your bags to a minimum. We recommend wearing comfortable, smart-casual clothing both onshore and onboard. We also suggest sturdy walking shoes, as you will do a significant amount of walking on shore excursions, often over cobblestones or uneven terrain. A sun hat, rain gear, and a coat or wrap for chilly evenings are useful items to have. For dining ashore, concerts, special events onboard, etc., men may want to bring a sports jacket and women a cocktail dress or pantsuit. Neckties are optional. Please note that shorts are not allowed at dinner aboard the ship.

Is laundry service available?

Most ships have either a self-serve laundrette (with ironing board) or laundry service for an additional fee. Please contact info@uniworld.com to find out what services your ship offers. No dry cleaning services are available on any ship.

Can I drink the water?

The tap water onboard is filtered and safe to drink, and bottled mineral water is replenished daily in your stateroom. Additional bottled water can be purchased just about anywhere onshore throughout Europe.

Can you accommodate special diets?

Kindly inform us in advance if you have specific dietary requests (e.g., low-fat, low-calorie, gluten-free, sugar-free, vegetarian, etc.). We have a "Traveling Lite" menu for guests seeking more health-conscious options, as well as light lunches, vegetarian options, and generous buffets that offer something for everyone. We will do our very best to accommodate your needs given the resources available to us.

What is the voltage?

Voltage in Europe and aboard our ships is 220v/50Hz with 2-pin "Schuko" outlets. All staterooms also have 110v outlets. Your electrical appliances from home may require an adapter and/or converter.

Is there onboard Internet access?

Select ships offer complimentary Wi-Fi access. Wi-Fi Service may be briefly interrupted in remote areas, while sailing, or when moving through locks, and the speed will likely be slower than what you are used to back home

What is Gold Seal Protection?

With the Uniworld "Gold Seal Protection" Policy, Uniworld will provide you with 100% of the Uniworld cancellation penalties in the form of a future cruise credit certificate, should you cancel your cruise/tour prior to your original scheduled flight departure date. If you wish for us to include this protection in your quote, please let us know when completing your 'Quote Request'.

Do we always dock in the heart of the city?

In many ports, your river ship is small enough to dock within easy walking distance of the historic city center. Elsewhere, the ship may need to dock farther away and a motorcoach transfer will be provided. There may be times when your ship moors next to another ship or between ships, especially in busy ports. Docking locations are determined by the local harbor authorities, not Uniworld or the ship's Captain.

How much walking should I expect?

Our itineraries focus on places of cultural and historical interest, which are often best experienced on a guided walking tour. You'll enjoy your cruise most if you are in good health and able to walk significant distances, often on cobblestones, uneven terrain, and up and down stairs. River cruise ships are not designed to accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters, nor are many older European buildings or historic sites. Guests with mobility issues may be unable to participate in all shore excursions, but are always welcome to relax onboard and enjoy a spa treatment or quiet time with a good book.

How do I book optional excursions once onboard?

Optional excursions can be booked with your Cruise Manager and charged to your onboard account. Some optional excursions need a minimum number of participants to operate. There are no refunds for cancellations made within 24 hours of the tour start time or for pre-paid tours. On pre/post-cruise extensions, you may book optional excursions with your Local Host and pay by credit card (cash not accepted). Optional excursions cannot be reserved prior to the cruise.

Could my itinerary change for any reason?

We make every effort to follow our itineraries exactly as promoted, but reserve the right to make any necessary changes to ensure the safety of our guests and ships. Time permitting, we will let you know of any known changes before you board the ship.

Does each sightseeing group on excursions have its own guide?
Yes, each group has its own English-speaking guide. Our local experts are considered the best in the industry, and our complimentary QuietVox audio headsets make it easy to hear every word of their insightful commentary.
Can I take children on my cruise?

In our experience, most young children - especially those under 4 - are simply not yet old enough to enjoy river cruising. We make no special arrangements for little ones and offer few kid-friendly activities onboard or onshore.

What about gratuities, either onboard or onshore?

All gratuities for the ship's staff and crew, as well as your onshore tour guides are included in your cruise fare. When going ashore on your own, keep in mind that tipping is less expected and more modest in Europe than it is in North America (although equally appreciated).

China River Cruise FAQ's

Do I need vaccinations?

We recommend consulting your doctor to make sure your vaccinations are up to date and that you are in good health, especially if traveling in Tibet's high altitudes (approx. 11,000 feet).

Are three people per room allowed on the China programs?

Yes, triple bookings are allowed.

What should I wear on my cruise?

It's best to pack for a range of weather conditions, depending on the season and the regions visited. Temperatures in China can vary greatly, from 90°F in Hong Kong to as low as 30°F in Lhasa, Tibet. Wearing layers of lightweight clothing will allow you to easily adjust to any temperature changes. Limiting your wardrobe to a simple mix-and-match color scheme will keep your bags to a minimum.

We recommend wearing comfortable, smart-casual clothing onshore and onboard. We also suggest sturdy walking shoes, as you will do a significant amount of walking on excursions, often over slippery or uneven terrain. A sun hat, rain gear, and a warm coat for chilly evenings or high altitude areas are useful items to have. For dining ashore, special performances, festive dinners onboard, etc., men may want to bring a sports jacket and women a cocktail dress or pantsuit. Please note that shorts are not allowed at dinner aboard the ship.

Is laundry service available?

Laundry service is available in all hotels and onboard your ship for an additional fee. No dry cleaning services are available onboard.

Can I drink the water?

The ship's tap water can be used for washing, but please do not drink or brush your teeth with it. Complimentary bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth is provided onboard, and additional bottled water is available free of charge on all excursions. All hotels on this itinerary provide complimentary in-room bottle water. When ashore, we strongly advise against drinking tap water or any beverage served with ice. Soft drinks, water, coffee and tea are included with all meals onboard. Red and white house wine and draught beer will be also included at all onboard dinners.

What's the food like?

All restaurant breakfasts are served buffet-style and offer both Western and Asian menu items. Most other meals onshore will feature authentic Chinese cuisine. Onboard your ship, breakfast and lunch will be buffets featuring Chinese and some Western cuisine, and dinners will highlight Chinese food served at table. You will also enjoy special themed meals through your journey, such as a Peking Duck dinner, a dinner show in Xi'an, and a dumpling lunch in Xi'an.

Can you accommodate special diets?

Kindly inform us if you have specific dietary requests (e.g., low-fat, low-calorie, sugar-free, vegetarian, vegan, etc.). We will do our best to accommodate your needs given the resources available to us.

What is the voltage?

The voltage in China is 220v/50Hz in all hotels and onboard the ship. Your electrical appliances from home will require a 3-pin plug adapter and a voltage converter.

Is there onboard Internet access?

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available onboard your ship in the Executive Lounge area. The Internet Corner allows you to access the Internet for a small fee. Internet access is also available in all hotels (an additional fee may apply, approximately $15-$20 USD per day).

Where does the ship dock?

In many Asian ports, your ship is small enough to dock within easy walking distance of places of interest.

Our China itineraries focus on places of cultural and historical interest, some of which prohibit vehicles. Guests should be in good health and able to walk significant distances, often on slippery or uneven terrain and up and down stairs. Docking facilities may differ from port to port and may be somewhat rudimentary; we will always ensure that gangways are safe and have crew members on hand to assist you.

Although our ships in China are equipped with elevators, they are not designed to accommodate wheelchairs or motor scooters. Many Asian buildings, historical sites, and embarkation/disembarkation facilities are also not wheelchair accessible. Guests with mobility issues may be unable to participate in all shore excursions, but are always welcome to relax onboard and enjoy a spa treatment or quiet time with a good book.

How do I book optional excursions once onboard?

Optional excursions can be booked with your Cruise/Tour Manager and charged to your onboard account. Some optional excursions need a minimum number of participants to operate. There are no refunds for cancellations made within 24 hours of the tour start time or for pre-paid tours. On pre- and post-cruise/tour extensions, you may book optional excursions with your Local Host and pay by credit card (cash not accepted).

Each group has its own English-speaking guide. Our local experts are considered the best in the industry, and our complimentary audio headsets make it easy to hear every word of their insightful commentary .
Can I take children on my cruise?

In our experience, most young children - especially those under 4 - are simply not yet old enough to enjoy river cruising. We make no special arrangements for little ones and offer few kid-friendly activities onboard or onshore.

What about gratuities, either onboard or onshore?

Gratuities are customary expressions of appreciation for a job well done, and it is our goal to ensure that you have the most enjoyable trip possible. Therefore, the amount of the gratuity you choose to give is entirely subject to your satisfaction with your travel experience. To assist you in determining the amount of your gratuities, we recommend the following as a guideline:

  • Cruise/Tour Manager: USD $8 to $10 per guest, per day (given on the last day of the cruise/tour before departure)
  • Ship staff and crew: USD $25 per guest, on 3- or 4-night cruises to be shared among all staff and crew (this will be charged to your onboard account at the time you check in, and the amount can be adjusted by the Reception Desk onboard at the end of the cruise)

Tips and gratuities are included for local experts, drivers, local river guides, rickshaw drivers, and boatmen during your trip, as well as on post-cruise land extensions purchased in conjunction with your cruise/tour (excluding Hong Kong).
