“Avalon Cruise on the Rhine & Moselle”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 5/5
Many thanks to Georgie at Global Journeys for your help with organising our European River Cruise. We enjoyed the experience a great deal and much of this was due to you. I do have some comments about Avalon specifically which I will itemise :

1. The cruise itinerary was great especially to places where we had not cruise before ie the Moselle River. I would recommend this to anyone
2. The content was varied and generally the operation went smoothly. We were supplied with plenty of information en route. In my critique to Avalon I did say the cruise director talked was too much during her daily 'port briefs' , however in her defense I know many on the cruise thought she was entertaining.
3. Personally I thought the meals were too fussy but as I had the choice of eating in the lounge at midday I did miss the evening meals on several occasions. Again I know others felt it was all fine and I will admit to being a 'non-foodie'
4. The cruise passengers were generally seniors from the USA, Canada, Australia, and NZ. We all got along well and we established some friendships
5. I was miffed with Avalon charging me $600 for the amendments to my flight details when I felt the mistake was not my doing. I have he email detailing my requirements which they did not seem to follow however as I did not notice this until much later in the booking process I did not feel justified in making a big issue of the matter.
6. Would I recommend this cruise to anyone - yes, but I would hesitate going with Avalon (this was my third and last trip with them). There did seem to be a big difference in what we Australians pay to that paid in the UK and the USA.

“12 Day Magical China Tour”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 5/5
All of the booking arrangements worked perfectly (international flights, airport pickups and drop offs, hotel accommodation, internal domestic flights, local bus tours etc). We could not have had a better China Tour guide than Vicky Qin, she was fantastic. The itinerary was busy but that's what you want in a tour such as this. The overall tour group of 16 people consisting of 2 Canadians, 12 Americans and us (2 Australians) was a comfortable and manageable number. We visited all of the "must see" sights including the Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Giant pandas, Yangtze River, Three Gorges Dam and many others. The VIP dining room on the river cruise was an excellent feature and the overall standard of meals on the tour was high, with western options available on most occasions. I would highly recommend this Tour.

“Netherlands and Belgium River Cruise”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 5/5
This was a different cruise to unknown destinations. Kathy our Cruise director was excellent and there was a good mix of Nationalities on board. It is rumoured that this cruise will not be operating beyond 2017 and it's a pity as it's a change to travel on another river rather than the Danube, Rhine and Rhone (which we have done all 3). Maybe Avalon are not pushing this area. They should as the towns we visited were very interesting especially Ypres, Ghent , Bruges ,Maastricht and even Namur. Our post tour hotel Radisson Blu in Brussels was in a good location and within easy walking distance to the Old Town. We would love to do more Avalon Cruises in Europe and hope they explore other destinations such as this one.

“River cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 5/5
Had a small hick up with not being picked up at the airport by Avalon, after waiting for 2 hours we caught a taxi and Avalon refunded the money with no problems. The overall trip was fantastic but the weather was cool as it was spring. everybody on the boat was very friendly and the staff were tremendous. The sightseeing was amazing with so much history, the cruise through the canal with all the locks was very impressive, would recommend the trip, we had a great time.

“A relaxing river cruise through the south of France”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 4/5
Our 2nd cruise with Avalon, and once again the food was fantastic, the room was beautiful, the crew were exceptional. A much more relaxed cruise when compared to the Gems, but still very enjoyable. The ship was only about half full. We did many of the optional outings to ensure we enjoyed ourselves and to see as much as we could (although choices are limited when compared to the Gems cruise but we knew that), Cannes, Avignon, Lyon, Old Medieval Town, Old Chateau for wine tasting, and ending in Paris in a wonderful old yet magnificent hotel. A friendly bunch of people on the cruise, and we all got on well.

We stayed in Paris for 3 extra nights to do our own relaxing and sight seeing (Paris Disneyland was fabulous). We should have come into Cannes a few days earlier, but didn't realise Nice and Monte Carlo were so close and easy access by train. We will do some more travelling, and look forward to travelling with Avalon and Global Journeys again (Thanks again Hannah).

“Great communication, effective booking”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 5/5
The trip was fantastic, most of all, the cruise and the daily itinerary was well explained and organised. The Avalon river cruise was exceptional, the staff was wondering, and the meals were a delight, although when compared to an ocean cruise, there were less variety, however, each meal was delicate and finely done. The itinerary and onboard entertainment was really good, on most towns/cities, there were a city walking tour organised, and choice of other tours in the afternoon with extra payments if so desired. The highlight would be the walking tours as well as the onboard entertainment invited on board on the Avalon. The downside I feel is that the river cruise is a lot more expensive in general compared to a ocean cruise, keeping in mind that a lot of excursions are included. Global Journeys have made it easy for us to follow the instructions and provided great communications during the time of organisation. I would definitely book with again again in the near future.

“Our first river cruise and it was extremely good”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 5/5
The trip was very well organised, the included tours good, the range of optional excursions quite varied and most were good, the crew were magnificent and very friendly, the food magnificent and in no short supply by any means. The cruise director was very professional and helpful (even organised a short ANZAC day event for the Australians and New Zealanders). The cabins and beds were very comfortable and well sound insulated, and the floor-to-ceiling door sliding open to allow full view uninterrupted views was magnificent. Couldn't fault any aspect of the cruise.

“Magnificent Europe with Avalon”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 5/5
I took an Avalon cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam with my 90 yr old mother and found the Avalon service to be impecable. Everything was 5 star, the rooms, service, staff, food and excursions were all better than expected and catered very well for slower walkers. Would highly recommend.

“Magnificent Europe”
Trip:    Overall Rating: 5/5
The Avalon Passion was a beautiful ship and all the staff from the Captain to cleaning crew were amazing!. Monica our Cruise Director was so helpful and informative, from her constant guidance with tours and her commentary on picturesque parts if the cruise. The food was so delicious, so many choices and you could help yourself to coffee and tea any time of day and there was even biscuits in one of the lounges. On-board entertainment was excellent and varied. I can't fault any part of our journey even though the weather gods didn't co-operate (it was a bit cold for the first week)! Congratulations Avalon and thank you.

Avalon FAQ's

Some of the frequently asked questions Avalon receive from their clients
Can I book directly with Avalon Waterways?

Yes you can, or you can book directly with Global Journeys, and save on the brochured price with our exclusive discounts, as well as receiving the best advice on all of your travel plans from your dedicated award winning tour consultant!

When can I expect to get my travel documents & itinerary?

Travel documents, including your paper tickets or e-ticket itineraries and other information, are posted by Global Journeys approximately two to three weeks prior to departure from Australia , provided full payment has been received.

Will I be travelling with people from other countries?

Avalon Waterways is an international company. As such, you will be travelling with like-minded cruise enthusiasts from countries as diverse as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as Europe and Asia regions.

Do you accept travellers who need special assistance?

Any disability requiring special attention should be reported to Global Journeys at the time the reservation is made. Avalon Waterways will make reasonable efforts to accommodate the special needs of disabled tour participants, but is not responsible in the event it is unable to do so, nor is it responsible for any denial of services by carriers, hotels, restaurants, or other independent suppliers. We regret that we cannot provide individual assistance to a tour member for walking, dining, and getting on and off motorcoaches and other transportation vehicles, or other personal needs. A qualified companion must accompany travellers who need such assistance.

On river cruises we do not have elevators that go to every level of the ship. Most doors to cabins, staterooms and restrooms are not wide enough to allow access by standard wheelchairs and other doorways may be fitted with coamings. For safety reasons travelers in wheelchairs cannot be carried on ramps in ports.

How old does a child have to be to travel with Avalon Waterways?

An adult must accompany travellers who are less than 18 years old on the tour departure date. We do not accept children under the age of 8.

What is SafetyNet Protection?

Avalon Waterways is dedicated to ensuring your trip is worry and hassle free, even when booking. Should you be uncertain what your commitments will be leading up to your departure, Avalon Waterways offer an optional SafetyNet Protection policy for an additional fee. Read more here.

How much luggage can I bring?

Porterage for one suitcase on tour is included in the tour price. Due to limited coach capacity and keeping within the guidelines of Occupation Health and safety, we strongly recommend that this single bag should have dimensions not exceeding 76x53x28cm (30"x 21"x 11") and weight not exceeding 22 kg (50 lbs). We do understand that slight variations to these dimensions will occur and provided the variations are only slight, luggage will be accepted.

Due to limited space on luggage racks in the coach, carry-on bags should not exceed the dimensions of 30x28x14cm (12"x11"x6"). For safety reasons, wheeled carry-on bags are not suitable as hand luggage on motorcoaches and minibuses as these bags can cause damage to persons and property if it falls from the overhead compartments for any reason. A carry-on bag and a handbag will be suitable inside the coach

Optional Excursions?

You can pre purchase selected optional excursions for your river cruise between 90 and 10 days prior to departure, on departures which have been placed onto a 'Guaranteed Departure' status. Details will be provided by your Global JOurneys Tour Consultant.

What is the bed configuration on an Avalon river cruise?

European vessels can be configured as either one bed or two separate beds. Unless specified, the default will be two separate beds pushed together with separate bedding. If your preference is for one bed or two separate beds apart, please request this at time of enquiry. Triple bedding is not available.

Am I expected to pay gratuities?

Gratuities to the Cruise Director and crew onboard are included in the cruise price. Tips to your Local Guides on optional excursions are not inlcuded in the cruise price. Tipping is a way to show your satisfaction for good service and is always appreciated but not expected. If you were to tip your Local Guides it is recommended that tips be paid in cash.

Do I need to bring an electricity adaptor?

Electricity on board our Avalon Waterways ships is 220v which requires a European Adaptor. You will need an adaptor or converter to use in your stateroom.

How do I make purchases on the cruise?

A cashless system operates on the ships so all purchases and shipboard services are credited to your account. At the end of the cruise you will receive your account which can be paid with cash, credit cards or paid in traveller's cheques (there is a processing fee). Traveller's cheques are not accepted on the Nile, on Lake Nasser nor in Southeast Asia. Personal cheques are not accepted. On the Mekong only cash, Visa and Mastercard are accepted for payment.

What beverages are included?

Wine and beer are included with all onboard dinners. Non-alcoholic alternatives are also available. Soft drinks are included with lunch. At other times, alcoholic beverages are available for an additional charge. In Europe and on the Mekong, regular coffee, tea and iced tea are available free of charge throughout the day from the self service coffee stations. On the Yangtze and Galapagos coffee, tea and soft drinks are included at lunch and dinner.

What meals should I expect?

All meals on board are prepared by accomplished chefs and consist of local food adjusted to suit the tastes of international passengers. There is a full buffet breakfast, and in Europe a buffet lunch including choice of soups and main courses with appetizer, salad or sandwich, and dessert. On the Yangtze, Mekong and Irrawaddy, a mix of Western and local dishes are offered; in the Galápagos, you'll be able to taste some Ecuadorian specialties.

Are laundry facilities available?

Laundry service is available on board for a modest fee. Price lists will be available in your stateroom. Please note that clothes cannot be dry cleaned on board. For safety reasons, we ask that you do not iron clothing in your cabin. For a small fee, the onboard laundry service is available to iron clothing. Laundry facilities are not available on the Galapagos cruise.

Is there a dress code?

Dress aboard and on shore is casual. Please bring comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing. Dinner attire is casual - open-neck shirts, pants, dresses. Coats and ties may be worn. The Captain's Welcome and Farewell Dinners are dressy, but not formal. On the Mekong and Irrawaddy coats and ties are not recommended due to the warm humid climate.
