Our Kimberley trip was amazing. We had an Excellent group of traveling companions who got on really well and all were fit enough to take part in all the activities. The accommodation and meals were first class and our guide was efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. We thought all the young people who worked at the eco lodges were first rate. Everyday was a highlight.

Our only regret was that we didn't have enough time in Broome to actually see or experience Broome, apart fro Cable Beach. We didn't even get to see beyond the resort there either, or to enjoy what the resort had to offer. With the benefit of hindsight, we should have gone a day earlier, or flown directly to Broom from Melbourne rather than via Perth, as others did. Going via Perth took up a day each way, instead of just 5 hours each way. I would think people should be advised of this.

Both Canada and Alaska parts were great. It is very hard to put out one thing cause everything was just wonderful. The group of fellow passengers were great and there was no trouble with anyone and the mix of people were great. Global Journeys were a great help with everything we need. Thank you so much.

We have had 8 overseas cruises and land trips and can say without doubt this APT Canada and Alaska 22 day holiday takes the cake. Cruise Director Willo Jones impressed with her knowledge of history and British Columbia and was most helpful in all aspects. A credit to APT. The APT staff on our Holland America cruise were excellent ambassadors. All in all a great trip made even more enjoyable by interaction between fellow travellers.

  “Not up to scratch.”

Have travelled with APT on a number of occasions and have always enjoyed their first class facilities. This trip, not so. The boating company they have subcontracted to are fairly slap dash (particularly the second one ). The Eastern European staff with the exception of a couple were surly, always in a hurry at meal times, and generally seemed like they had had enough and didn't want to be there.

The first part of the Journey...the Bordeaux component was more about bussing you after breakfast for 1.5 hours to some average "highlight", then back on the bus to get back to the boat for lunch. All the moorings with the exception of one were in boring little towns with no atmosphere. A complete disappointment!

The second half of the trip was far more interesting although getting you back to the boat for lunch seemed again the main priority. Overall, not anywhere near the standard of APT tours we have enjoyed in the past. Would not recommend it to anyone.

This is our first time with APT and would definitely travel with them again. Most of our accommodation was first class as was the beautiful food, great tour director (Jennet) and the driver (Mark) they really added to the enjoyment of the trip. We would have preferred a smaller tour group, however having said that the organisation went so smoothly, it really wasn't a problem. This is our first time with Global journeys with Yvonne and I would definitely book through them again as the service was excellent, nothing was too much trouble.

  “Enjoyable sightseeing of France”

We enjoyed our sightseeing of France very much, but the cruising on AmaCello and AmaLyra itself was quite average. The majority of guests on both ships AmaCello and AmaLyra were from Australia. There were three couples from NZ and some from UK. The food onboard both the ships was about average. While AmaLyra provided better quality food, the service was much slower.

The Tour Director undertook his work well. We always enjoyed his port talks every day before dinner, discussing the activities for the following day. The talks were lively, entertaining and informative. We encountered some bad experiences, which we will describe briefly below, from the time we made the booking through to the end of our trip. We have travelled with APT 6 times, but now we are very hesitant to travel with them again.

Our tour booking included flights from Australia and back. There was a couple of months delay in APT issuing our air tickets after we paid for our tour in full. Our Global Journeys agent and us were all anxious that we might not be able to get tickets to fly. On check-in, our cabin on AmaLyra was not cleaned thoroughly. We had to clear rubbish left in drawers by previous guests.

A few days prior to the scheduled special lunch on the Eiffel Tower, we got a letter in our cabin informing us that the lunch was cancelled because APT could not obtain tickets for it. In its place we were provided with a cruising lunch on the Seine River. APT blamed the Eiffel Tower Administration Office for the cancellation.

When we made the booking for the tour, we told APT that we did not want to go to the Moulin Rouge dinner & show which was part of the tour, so APT offered us 50 EURO per person to go and dine independently in Paris and we would receive that money from the Tour Director. The offer was documented in our Booking Advice and also re-confirmed by APT in their email to Global Journeys prior to our departure. When we spoke to the Tour Director about the offer, he had no knowledge of it and he told us that it was not APT's policy to make such an offer. However we insisted that the written offer should be honored. A few days after, the Tour Director advised us APT would honor the offer. Even though the issue was resolved eventually, we were not very happy with the whole situation.

APT fellow travellers and we had issues with the check-in and room cleaning at the APT Post-tour hotel in Paris, Hotel du Collectionneur Arc de Triomphe. The APT local representative in Paris, Rachel, is fully aware of the issues. Even though the hotel check-in time was 3PM, we considered ourselves more lucky than some others when we were allocated a room soon after 3PM. Some were still in the lobby after 5 PM waiting for their rooms to become available. However, our happiness was short-lived as we discovered that our room only had a sofa bed, not a proper bed. We did not expect to pay A$700.00 a night to sleep on a sofa bed. Rachel came to our room, took some photos to send back to APT and then spoke to the hotel about the room conditions. Fortunately, the problem was soon resolved and we were given a room with a proper bed. On the following day, we received a written apology note from the hotel. However, our problems with the hotel did not end there. Our room was not cleaned on the next day. We spoke to the hotel 3 times and also to Rachel without success. That night after dinner, we managed to have our dirty towels exchanged for some fresh ones, and to have shampoo and shower gel re-supplied. This was completely not acceptable for a five star hotel.

The trip was excellent. We were able to really get a feel for the Kimberley. Food on the trip was excellent - better in the lodges than even Cable Beach. Walks were a little challenging due to terrain but always rewarded with a wonderful swim. A little downtime at the wilderness lodges would have been great but not at the expense of seeing all the sights.

We loved all of it. A highlight was the Tunnel Creek walk, with the assistance of two indigenous guides. They did a great job. The trip went without a hitch, except for one flat tyre. Not bad for 20 of us.

This was our 2nd APT tour having already done Vietnam and Cambodia. The tour was very well organised and nothing was too much trouble for our tour director Judy. The accommodation was of a very good standard and we certainly saw many beautiful places. The freedom of choice experiences were also very good. Still can't believe that I went zip-lining in Whistler. We also enjoyed the Rocky Mountaineer. The food was excellent but unfortunately the smoke from the forest fires detracted from some of the views of the Rockies.

It was a pretty "full on"" tour with a couple of pretty long days on the coach. Think that we really find the river cruising more relaxing but we wouldn't have been able to see and do all we did without this. Georgie form Global Journeys was very helpful with any booking queries we had along the way. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend both APT and Global Journeys.

General FAQ's

I am travelling alone. Is this OK?

Many passengers travel with APT on their own. You can choose to pay the single-supplement rate which enables you to be accommodated in a single room or cabin. Alternatively you can choose to be matched up with a person of the same gender and pay the twin-share price. In this instance, accommodation will be in twin-bedded rooms (not applicable on river crusies).

I have specific dietry requirements, do you cater for this?

APT will endeavour to cater for all special diets and preferences. Please advise Global Journeys of your dietary requirements at the time of booking and we will include the information within your booking to ensure you are catered for appropriately. Please note that in more remote locations options may be more limited.

When can I expect to get my travel documents & itinerary?

Travel documents, including your travel kit are sent approximately two to three weeks prior to departure from your home country, provided full payment has been received.

I booked my trip with a flight promotion, can I request changes or special preferences?

If your APT trip was booked with a Fly Free or Companion Fly Free promotion, or if your flights were booked by Global Journeys with APT then please read this.

What is the luggage restriction on my tour/river cruise?

Each passenger is entitled to take one piece of luggage that does not exceed 160cm (63 inches), weight limit 20kg (44 pounds), plus a piece of hand luggage.

Do you pick up or drop off at the airport from any hotel?

APT will only pick up or drop off when accommodation is booked with Global Journeys through APT, however there are some restrictions that apply to some tours in regards to the number of pick up and drop off options.

Do you allow children on your tours & river cruises?

Yes, however the minimum age is 7 years on our escorted coach tours and 13 years on our river cruises. Please enquire for further details.

What is the average age of people on your tours & crusies?

Our clients are generally 50+, but more than age a positive attitude is important in a group situation. We have found ages to be as diverse and varied as the sites and attractions you will see on tour.

What is APT Deposit Cancellation Cover?

With APT Deposit Cancellation Cover you can cancel your holiday 100 days prior to travel and retain a full APT holding credit of the deposit paid. There are no penalties if a new booking is then made within three years. If you wish for us to include this protection in your quote, please let us know when completing your 'Quote Request'.

Why is my contact information collected when I book?

There may be times when unforeseen events beyond our control impacttravel schedules and potentially disrupt cruises, tours, or packages. These include, but are not limited to, severe weather conditions, acts of nature, and government travel advisories. Under such circumstances, it is critical that APT be able to contact you immediately and reliably - including nights, weekends, and holidays - to make sure we've informed you of any possible changes to your travel.

Why should I book an African tour with APT?

What does the price include?

All coach, rail and cruise travel, accommodation, sightseeing, internal airfares, park fees, gratuities, port charges, admissions, luggage service (one bag), local guides, services of a Tour Director, and meals (as specified and indicated in each individual itinerary).

So flights within Africa are included?

Economy flights within Africa and airport taxes are included in the price. This is based on passengers booking an international ticket to Africa with South African Airways. A surcharge may apply if H class for internal flights is not available or flying another airline. If you are flying with another international airline (not SAA), internal flights will be based on best fare available at the time of booking.

Do you allow children on your tours?

Children under twelve years of age are not recommended on tours to Africa. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult and share their accommodation with an adult. Game lodges cannot guarantee triple bedding.

What are the passport requirements for travelling to Africa?

South African passport control has become very strict. Passports MUST be valid for at least six months from the passengers' return home date. We recommend a validity of nine months to prevent any problems in this regard. There must be at least three blank VISA pages in the passport (not endorsement pages). Guests have been deported for having insufficient visa pages in their passports.

Do I need a Visa or Permit to enter Africa?

At the time of printing, Australian & New Zealand passport holders are required to obtain appropriate tourist visas before they depart, for entry into Kenya and Tanzania. People of all nationalities will need to contact the relevant consulates for the most up-to-date information on visa requirements. If you hold a passport from another country, check our Passports & Visas page about specific visa and permit regulations.

Will I need any vacinations before I leave?

A Yellow Fever vaccination is required for Tanzania, Zambia, Rwanda and recommended for Kenya. The South African Department of Health has advised that passengers returning from or travelling to Zambia require proof of a Yellow Fever vaccination. In-transit passengers, irrespective of the time period in transit in Johannesburg, still require proof of the Yellow Fever vaccination. Please note that authorities require visitors who've been to East Africa to hold valid Yellow Fever certificates upon re-entry. Antimalarial medication is recommended for Africa. See your doctor or visit a travel clinic at least eight weeks before you travel for your recommended vaccines and/or malaria medication.

How fit do I need to be to travel with APT to Africa?

Travel is in 4WD vehicles in game parks and all throughout East Africa. Anyone with back conditions or limited mobility should seek advice from their doctor about joining this tour. Dust may also irritate contact lenses, therefore we suggest bringing glasses. In many of the cities and game parks walking is required on uneven ground and gravel paths, and good mobility is needed getting on/off 4WD vehicles, coaches, river ships and trains.

What are the meals like?

African cuisine offers a vast array of dining experiences from right across the continent. In South Africa's Cape Town, enjoy exotic Cape Malay fare and delicious seafood, while in Zululand experience traditional African cuisine made from fresh local produce. Throughout your trip, be open to wonderful new dining opportunities, such as sumptuous bush dinners in breathtaking African wilderness settings or outdoor boma dining, providing the quintessential African safari meal under the stars. South Africa is also renowned for its world-class wine regions, while there is nothing quite like special sundowner drinks, served after a safari in a beautiful game reserve, as the sun sets.

Asia FAQ's

Do I need a Visa to travel to Asia?

Citizens of Australia & New Zealand require visas for travel to Vietnam and China which must be obtained prior to departure. If you hold a passport from another country, check with us about specific visa regulations. Read more here.

What kind of meals are included onboard the cruise component of our tour?

On the Mekong, all meals onboard the ship are included. Meals are served in the dining room in a single sitting. Open seating allows you to sit at different tables for each meal if you wish to meet fellow passengers. Table reservations are not accepted. All meals are prepared by local chefs and consist of Western cuisine as well as Vietnamese, Cambodian and Thai. Lunch includes salads, soups, a selection of hot mains and dessert. Dinner is a multi course meal with a selection of main courses. Complimentary soft drinks, juices, local beer, house brand spirits, international house wine, filtered coffee and tea are available throughout the cruise. A wine cellar is available for premium wines and spirits to purchase at an additional cost.

On the Yangtzee, a team of internationally trained chefs and a well stocked wine cellar ensure dining aboard Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer is a superb experience. Innovative menus feature the finest of Chinese and continental cuisine, served with complimentary house wines and other refreshments at all lunches and dinners. Enjoy a hot buffet and salads at lunch and a four course à la carte menu at dinner. Please do not drink the tap water in your suite. Bottled water is placed in your suite daily. Water and ice served in the Explorer Bar and dining room are safe. Tap water in China is generally not safe for drinking.

How do I pay for purchases and services onboard?

There is a no cash policy during the sailing. All settlement will be calculated at the time of check out. Please check the invoice to make sure all items are accounted for before payment/closing of the account. Payment is accepted by cash (US dollars or Vietnamese dong), Visa, MasterCard and American Express. In China only card are accepted. Some bank/credit cards may charge a separate fee as well.

What language is used onboard our cruise?

The onboard language is English. All staff, crew and local guides speak a high standard of English

When is the best time to travel to Vietnam & Cambodia?

The climate on Vietnam is tropical in the south; monsoonal in the north with the hot, rainy season (May to September) and warm, dry season (October to March). The climate in Cambodia is also tropical with the rainy, monsoon season in (May to November) and the dry season (December to April). There is little seasonal temperature variation. We have average temperatures and rainfall listed on every itinerary.

When is the best time to travel to China?

Normally, the most comfortable season of the year is early autumn (September to early October). During that period, temperatures are reasonable throughout China with a limited amount of rain. Spring can also be delightful with the average temperatures roughly the same as in autumn. We have average temperatures and rainfall listed on every itinerary.

Kimberley 4WD FAQ's

How old is 'too old'on a Kimerberley Wilderness Adventure?

There's no such thing as too old, as our tours put the spring back into your step. It doesn't matter what age you are as long as you are in good health, and have a spirit of adventure. Join us and swim in remote waterholes and below striking waterfalls. Enjoy guided bushwalks (sometimes over uneven terrain) on all our tours. And yes, a good general level of fitness is required.

Are these Kimerberley 4WD tours suitable for children?

Given the nature of our adventures in the Kimberley, we recommend that seven (7) years of age is the minimum age for children joining one of our tours. All children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. During Australian school holiday periods, there may be a higher proportion of children on board the tour.

Wilderness Camps & Lodges? Tented Cabins? You call this a holiday?

Absolutely! Our network of exclusive Wilderness Lodges are designed for you to enjoy a unique experience in some of the most remote regions of the Kimberley, without compromising your comfort.

Our Wilderness Lodges feature permanent and sturdy tented cabins on a raised wooden floor with private ensuites. A range of Standard and Superior tented cabins feature twin or king beds, spacious ensuites with hot showers and flushing toilets, and a private front deck.They also feature low voltage night lighting and solar powered hot water throughout the camp.

What about the 4WD vehicles?

Our modern fleet consists of Mercedes and Isuzu Landcruiser 4-wheel drive vehicles that have air conditioning, comfortable coach-style seating, and are seat belt equipped. These vehicles are fitted with satellite telephones ensuring uninterrupted communications with our Broome base, in case of an emergency. All vehicles have been specifically designed for the rugged Kimberley terrain.

What's a standard camping meal?

There's nothing standard about our meals; they are praised as being plentiful, well balanced, and healthy. Breakfasts include cereal, toast with condiments, and often with cooked options. Lunches are fresh with a variety of cold meats, salads and breads, served picnic style. Dinners are delicious home-style three-course meals, served in unique dining areas. Enjoy a glass of wine from the bar with your evening meal, and reflect on another great Kimberley day.

When is the Kimberley at its best?

April through to October are the most pleasant months to travel through the remote Kimberley region. In April/May and September/October the weather is fine and hot with mild nights (average maximum 33 degrees Celsius). From June to August the days are fine and warm with cold nights (average maximum 29 degrees Celsius). Inland conditions at night can drop down to 2 degrees Celsuis. Rainfall is rare.

What to bring?

Casual, drip dry, hand washable clothing is recommended. Bring 4 or 5 changes of clothing, including shorts, T-shirts, collared and long sleeve shirts to avoid sunburn, and a windcheater and pants for cooler evenings. In winter, thermal wear offer great warmth and easy to pack. A good pair of hiking boots is recommended, along with some shoes you don't mind getting wet. It is recommended that you bring a sun hat, sunglasses, sun block and all necessary toiletries (Gentlemen, don't forget a razor as your electronic shaver cannot be powered out here!)

Can clothes be washed along the way?

Which airlines fly to the Kimberley?

Qantas and Virgin Blue both fly to Darwin and Broome from all major Australian centres. Air North, the Kimberley's regional airline operates daily services between Darwin, Kununurra and Broome. Skywest operate flights from Perth to Broome and Kununurra.

Europe River Cruising FAQ's

Are meals included onboard?

All meals onboard are included. Meals are served in the dining room in a single sitting. No table reservations can be made in the main restaurants. Guests have the option of making a reservation at the Erlebnis Chef's Table Restaurant. Please note that reservations can only be made onboard the ship. Onboard, enjoy a full buffet breakfast in the restaurant. Lunch consists of salads, soups, a choice of mains and dessert. Dinner is a multicourse meal with a selection of mains. On Royal Collection cruises, casual dining is available in the River Bistro.

What are your handicapped facilities like?

Handicapped facilities on board are limited. River cruise vessels are not equipped with wheelchair ramps and hallways and doors may not be wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. Ships are equipped with an elevator but it does not access all decks. Additionally, motorcoaches and minibuses used for transfers and shore excursions may not be equipped with wheelchair ramps. Any condition requiring special attention must be reported to Global Journeys & APT at the time of booking. Facilities and services for passengers with disabilities differ among destinations and, in some cases, may be limited or non-existent. Participants requiring special assistance must be accompanied by a person responsible for and physically able to provide such assistance. Transfers and shore excursions follow a predetermined timetable and thus participants should have no physical impairment(s) that would affect the time schedules or interfere with the rights of other passengers on their holiday.

Are gratuities included?

Gratuities are included for all cruise staff and local guides on all river cruises and extended land touring.

How do I pay for purchases and services onboard?

For your convenience, all purchases and paid services onboard are billed to your shipboard account. At the end of the cruise, you will receive a total that can be paid with cash or credit card. The ships do not accept payments made by Diners Club cards, prepaid Visa or MasterCard, EFTPOS, Travelex cards or travellers cheques. The onboard currency is the Euro.

Do you have a share program for singles?

Solo travellers pay only a 50% single supplement on all suite categories from E to P+ on European River Cruises. On Exclusive Sailings we will match up those who are willing to share a suite with another single traveller of the same gender, so you don't have to pay the single supplement. If no match is found then single supplements apply.

Do I need to bring an electricity adaptor?

Electricity is 220V. A plug adaptor is necessary if you plan to bring appliances from home. On select Concerto ships there is one Australian power point in each suite. Adaptors can be purchased onboard your APT ship.

Is there internet access onboard?

All ships offer internet facilities. Suites have free internet access, and are equipped with a monitor and keyboard (no USB port available). Remember to take all log-ins and passwords with you to log in to your favourite websites. For all ships, wireless internet is also available; however, you need to bring your own laptop or tablet to access the wi-fi. As all ships use a satellite system, routing may cause reception to be restricted at times.

When do we embark and disembard on arrival and departure?

Official embarkation of the ship is at 3pm, which gives staff time to prepare your suite. In the case of an early arrival, you may check your luggage onto the ship and enjoy exploring the port city. On departure, check-out is at 9am and luggage may be stored.

South America FAQ's

Altitude sickness - will it be an issue on tour?

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition caused by ascending to high altitudes. Some parts of Peru, including Cusco and Lake Titicaca, are situated at an altitude of up to 4000 metres. At these altitudes, the lack of oxygen affects most people to some extent, until they become acclimatised. Some symptoms include headaches, lethargy, dizziness, loss of appetite or just light-headedness. To reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness we recommend that you drink plenty of fluids: water, fruit juice, herbal tea and the local 'mate de coca' and avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.

Are flights included within South America?

Once the tour commences, all flights within South America are included. APT has chosen the best available connections for your holiday; some of these may be early morning or late afternoon departures. We find flight schedules can change regularly, and our APT tour director will keep you informed of any changes that occur while on tour. Since we cannot guarantee pre-assigned seats or do a group check-in ahead of time, your tour director will assist you at the airports.

What are the meals like?

South American cuisine offers a vast array of foods right across the continent and is world renowned for exceptional quality red meat, especially in Argentina and Brazil. Peru and Chile will offer some of the finest seafood, including ceviche (a raw seafood dish cooked in citrus juice) and sushi. Throughout your trip, there will be a variety of food styles, so be prepared to delight your taste buds. South American wines are a highlight of the trip, and some of the best wine regions in the world are located in Argentina and Chile. There is also a large number of spirits, liqueurs and cocktails that are unique to their associated regions.

Are gratuities inlcluded on our South American tour?

Gratuities are included for all of your included meals, hotel charges, APT tour director, driver and local guides. See your travel documentation for any variations to the above.

How fit do I need to be tour South America?

APT requires passengers to have a good level of fitness and health to participate in our South American tours. Given the size of South America and the distances covered, the pace of this itinerary can include some long days with early morning starts, which may also be due to airline schedules. When visiting many of the cities and ruins walking is required on cobbled streets, steps (sometimes steep) and uneven footpaths, and a good level of mobility is required. You should be able to stand on your feet for an extended period of time to visit museums and other sites. In the lead-up to your tour we recommend you try to walk for an hour at a time at least three times a week. This will ensure you have the stamina and energy to see and appreciate all of the sites we'll take you to. You should also ensure your walking shoes fit properly and have been broken-in prior to departure. We recommend seeking medical advice prior to your travels. Consult your local doctor for the latest immunisation and medical recommendations.

What should we pack?

The dress code on tour is casual. We suggest bringing a pair of good walking shoes, casual lightweight clothing that can be layered, a jacket or parka, and a sweater or windcheater. In the mountainous areas (including Machu Picchu), bring your well-worn runners or boots, warm clothing for the cold nights, and your hat and sunscreen. There are no formal nights or dress requirements, though many people wear smart casual attire for dinners and dressier clothing for some nights out.

Arrival & Departure Information

What happens when you arrive at your destination, including information on airport transfers with APT
River Cruises

All APT clients travelling on river tours receive a transfer on the first and last day of the holiday. This will be from the airport to/from either the ship or tour hotel. Transfers must be booked and details advised to Global Journeys at least 60 days prior to travel. A transfer is not included, though may be purchased, should you be arriving or departing on days other than the first and last day of touring. These additional transfers are only applicable when your pre and/or post tour arrangements are booked with Global Journeys & APT.

If you have not arranged an arrival transfer with Global Journeys, make your own way to the ship or hotel with the help of the information provided in your trvael documents. If you have independent travel arrangements prior to your APT tour and do not have an APT transfer, the Tourist Information office at your arrival city will be able to offer assistance with directions to the ship or hotel. If you transfer to the ship on your own, we recommend you call the ship prior to confirm the ships docking location. The APT Office is available in case of an emergency.

Coach Tours

Arrival transfers are included on Day 1 of your tour. Return transfer is included on the last day of the tour. All flight information must be given to Global Journeys at least 45 days prior to your departure date. If this information is not received we are unable to guarantee the transfer. If pre or post accommodation is booked then transfers cannot be included.
