If you need a break from the human race, the wilderness and solitude of Antarctica may be just the place to restore your equilibrium. Here are some good reasons why you should visit Antarctica.

The wildlife

Penguins, penguins and more penguins! There are four species of penguin that live, breed and nest on the Antarctic shores and nearby islands – the the Adélie, Chinstrap, Gentoo and Emperor Penguins. Serenity and solitude will not come to mind when you take in the numbers, noise and smell of the colonies. Also topping the must-see wildlife list are Whales including Humpbacks, Minke Whales and Orca, Seals and an abundance of seabirds including Terns, Petrel and Albatross.

Small Groups

Antarctica is still one of the few destinations where visitor numbers are relatively low, Strict environmental obligations on operators ensure that numbers are limited and consequently tours are often small and intimate with a focus on conservation and the natural environment.

Iceburgs and Scenery

Antarctica is a photographer’s dream and the sighting of the first iceberg on a cruise is always an exciting moment. With varying hues and often sculpted into dramatic shapes by the wind, they make for a pretty amazing vista. Iceburgs aside, the landscape itself is totally unique with massive sheer cliffs and jagged peaks that plummet straight into the sea. Add amazing sunsets and sunrises and you have a dramatic and spectacular backdrop for the abundance of wildlife.

Crossing the Drake Passage

The Drake Passage, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Pacific, is well known for turbulent seas and dramatic crossings. However, there are enough decent crossings to, at times, earn it the name The Drake Lake. Chances are you will get something in between. Certainly, crossing the passage will earn you the bragging rights of any seasoned sailor and the prize at the end of the pristine and calm Antarctic waters makes the risk of a little sea sickness well worth it.

Don’t forget the Cruise Itself

As well as the first class, knowledgeable lecturers and expedition leaders on Antarctica cruises, many operators offer a luxury ship experience with five-star dining, beautifully appointed cabins, sundecks and spa facilities. Don’t forget you also get to explore the departure and finish destinations for Antarctic cruises which is an incentive in itself.
