Arrive Paris

All the flavours of France come to life on this unforgettable journey that kicks off in Paris, the City of Light. Spend your day meandering past its iconic landmarks in search of hidden treasures before joining your fellow travellers and Travel Director for a Welcome Reception and orientation drive through the city to see some of its most magnificent sights lit up at night. (WR) Stay: Millenium Opera

Paris - Beaune - Lyon

We travel south to Burgundy, past the Côte d'Or vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits St. Georges. The colourful geometric roof tiles of the 15th century Hospice are a sight to behold as we arrive in the medieval town of Beaune before continuing to Lyon, the gourmet capital of France. Perhaps spend your evening delving into the delicious delights for which Lyon is justifiably famous. Why not meander up the city's narrow cobblestone lanes lined with pastel pink and yellow façades in search of a cosy bouchon for a tasty dinner with newfound friends? (BB) Stay: Novotel Gerland Musée Des Confluences

Lyon - Avignon - Monaco - French Riviera (2 Nights)

We stop in the heart of Provence and the city of Avignon, what was once the Papal Seat in the 13th century and today remains as an important place of pilgrimage. See the Papal Palace and the bridge made famous in the song - sur le pont d'Avignon. Journeying through the wheat and lavender fields of Provence, immortalised in the great works of such artists as Van Gogh and Cézanne, we arrive in the sophisticated Principality of Monaco, where we will view the cathedral where Prince Ranier and Princess Grace were married. This evening we enjoy a Regional Meal in Monaco before arriving at our hotel. (BB/RM) Stay: Best Western Plus Massena

French Riviera

The sun-kissed shores of the French Riviera are yours to explore today. Meander along Nice's elegant Promenade des Anglais treading in the footsteps of the aristocrats of yesteryear, relax on the beach with your fellow sun-worshippers or perhaps visit the charming hilltop town of St. Paul de Vence, a popular haunt for actors seeking a relaxing retreat. This evening you have the opportunity to soak up the fresh sea air and indulge in delicious Salad Niçoise overlooking the beautiful Bay of Angels. (BB)

French Riviera - Arles - Carcassonne

Visit Arles with its honey-coloured façades, Roman ruins and Camargue culture enjoying some time at leisure to explore this beautiful city before winding your way through the Corbières Hills and 'Cathar' landscapes en route to the fortified city of Carcassonne. Join a Local Specialist to explore this exquisite ancient town, view the Cité, which is said to have inspired Walt Disney for his Castle of Sleeping Beauty, and see the double ring of ramparts spanning some 3km with 52 towers. (BB/DW) Stay: Mercure La Cite

Carcassonne - Lourdes - Biarritz

We drive toward the Pyrénées this morning and arrive in Lourdes, the global centre of the Marian pilgrimage. You will have an opportunity to see the Basilica perched atop St. Bernadette's Grotto where the young girl is said to have seen visions of the Virgin Mary. We travel north to the graceful Basque town of Biarritz on France's Atlantic coast where we spend the night. (BB/DW) Stay: Radisson Blu

Biarritz - Bordeaux (2 Nights)

Journeying through Les Landes, we arrive in the wine capital of Bordeaux whose stunning Garonne riverfront and age of Enlightenment history and architecture have made it one of France's most visited cities. Bordeaux wine has been produced in the region since the 8th century and the bi-annual wine fair attracts buyers from all over the world. Spend some time seeing the sights during your orientation of the city, including the magnificent Esplanade des Quinconces. Then spend the rest of the day exploring the Port of the Moon on your terms. (BB) Stay: Novotel

Follow the Liberty Highway to St. Lô and on to Omaha Beach where your Travel Director will provide an excellent account of the poignant events that took place here and changed the course of history in Europe. Reflect on the bravery of the young men who sacrificed their lives for freedom and visit the D-Day Landing Zone to learn in detail about how the operation was planned and executed. Arrive later at your hotel where you dine tonight. (BB/DW) Stay: Mercure Omaha Beach

Omaha Beach - Giverny - Paris (2 Nights)

Spend the rest of the day enjoying the sights on your terms. See the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo at the Louvre, enjoy a leisurely café au lait in quiet surrounds or shop for souvenirs in the Latin Quarter. “The Very Best of France”
Booking With Global Journeys
The booking process for Cathay Pacific flights & Trafalgar's Best of France Tour were handled very professionally by Hannah at Global Journeys. Can't fault service & meals on Cathay Pacific. I'm always happy to fly on that airline.

The 13-day Trafalgar Best of France Tour was very comprehensive, giving a detailed overview of the country. I opted to take advantage of all the optional outings offered (as did most of the other passengers) - something I don't normally do, as they're often just dinners & entertainment put on solely for tourists, not the 'genuine thing'. Doing this enabled us, for example, to visit the Palace of Versailles (approx. 20 kms. from Paris) easily & far more quickly than trying to do it on our own. The night at the Moulin Rouge was costly but an experience not to be missed! Again, picked up at our hotel, dropped off at the door of the Moulin Rouge, coach waiting for us afterwards, then dropped off back at our hotel - so easy! The cost of the Best of France tour included both our first & last nights' accommodation in Paris (which isn't always the case with tour operators), plus some sightseeing in Paris itself.

Our Tour Guide (Krista), and Driver (Gilbert) were both second to none! - & I've been on numerous tours. This was my first Trafalgar tour and the only slight criticism would be that the standard of most hotels wasn't quite as good as I'd expected, but they were clean, comfortable, and well located. A great trip with a great group of people, great crew, in a great country!

“The 'Best' Best of France Trafalgar tour”
Booking With Global Journeys
We began in Paris with an introduction to our tour guide David. He was a walking encyclopedia on France, even though he was English. David soon had us trained in early rising, packing and leaving our bags out for collection each morning. Hotel breakfasts were hot and quite good, as was the accommodation. I do advise to pack your own tea if you are a tea drinker. The French don't seem to comprehend English tea. The pace of our tour was hectic at times but leisurely at other times. Our driver Jojo, made negotiating the narrow french streets look easy and was a delightful man. Take plenty of pictures as the number of sights can become a blur. Monaco and Nice were surprisingly good, as was the Loire valley and Omaha Beach. Included meals were good, varied and often at local restaurants. Extra excursions were a must and good value. They should be considered when costing your tour. Paris deserved the extra time allocated and was a perfect setting for our farewell to this excellent tour. I have spent many hours sifting through film and photos of this trip and it serves to enhance the memories of a time I would do again if the opportunity came.

“Top notch tour around France”
Booking With Global Journeys
The Best of France tour by Trafalgar was incredible. We visited beautiful cities like Paris, Lyon, Nice and Bordeaux and also smaller historic towns like Beaune, Biarritz and Carcassonne where we stayed within the impressive castle. The evening meals throughout were top class and were three courses including wine. These meals were either at the hotels or at historic buildings such as in Carcassonne and Paris where we dined in one of the oldest and most prominent in the city. The tour was made even more enjoyable by our tour director who was incredibly knowledgeable and a very caring but also efficient person. The other travellers mainly American, Australian and Canadian were great fun to travel with and everyone enjoyed each others company immensely. It really did became a family away from home. Global Journeys were also a great company to deal with regarding booking and ticketing. Always available and very responsive.
