1

Arrive In Lisbon, Portugal

Welcome to Lisbon! At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and travelling companions for a welcome dinner with wine at your hotel. (D)
2

Lisbon

Lisbon was the centre of Europe's longest-lived overseas empire. Portugal's imperial ambitions date back to Prince Henry the Navigator's 15th-century discoveries in West Africa. Morning sightseeing with a Local Guide features a drive through the Baixa quarter's main squares. Then, enjoy a walk through the cobblestone alleys of quaint ALFAMA, the popular quarter of the seamen and Fado singers. Drive along the grand Avenida da Liberdade up to Pombal Square, and stop for pictures of Belem Tower and the Monument of the Discoverers. Also visit JERONIMOS MONASTERY with the tomb of Vasco da Gama. An exciting optional excursion to the royal palace of Queluz is available, as well as dinner at a typical taverna with Fado-style entertainment. (B)
3

Lisbon - Obidos - Alcobaca - Nazare - Fatima - Tomar

Stop in medieval Obidos and go back in time as you pass the main gate in the impressive perimetre wall and walk along the narrow streets. Continue to Alcobaca to visit the CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA MONASTERY, built in the 12th century for 999 Cistercian monks. See the elaborate tombs of King Pedro I and his Castilian lover, Ines de Castro. The fishing harbour of Nazare is the perfect place for a leisurely lunch break. In the afternoon, mix with the pilgrims at the country's hallowed national shrine, Fatima's SANCTUARY OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY. Overnight in Tomar, the historic seat of the mighty Order of the Knights of Christ. (B/D)
4

Tomar - Conimbriga - Coimbra - Oporto

Visit the hilltop CONVENT OF CHRIST with its famous Manueline Window. Farther north, the ROMAN RUINS OF CONIMBRIGA are eloquent testimony to centuries of Roman influence. Tour the excavations, admire the well-preserved mosaics, and visit the excellent MUSEUM. Continue to Coimbra, strategically situated on a hill overlooking the Mondego River. After a visit to the gilded baroque LIBRARY of its 700-year-old university, drive by ancient Bucaco Forest on your way to Oporto, Portugal's second-largest city. Tonight, why not join an optional cruise on the Douro River, followed by dinner at one of Oporto's fine restaurants? (B)
5

Oporto

Sightseeing with a Local Guide includes a panoramic drive to the mouth of the Douro River, the soaring cathedral, the richly decorated CHURCH OF SAO FRANCISCO, and the STOCK EXCHANGE with its contemporary ARABIAN HALL/ inspired by Granada's Alhambra. Next, visit the famous Sandeman & Co. PORT WINE CELLAR to taste the Port wine produced from grapes of the Douro Valley. (B)
6

Oporto - Guimaraes - Vila Real - Viseu

In Guimaraes, often referred to as the "Cradle of Portugal" because of its association with the country's first king, Alfonso Henriques, enjoy a walk through the medieval centre. Next, taste Portuguese tapas with wine at the Quinta da Aveleda WINERY and visit its splendid GARDENS. From here, a scenic road through the port wine vineyards leads to Viseu, where a special dinner with local specialties and wine awaits you at Forno da Mimi restaurant. (B/D)
7

Viseu - Belmonte - Castelo De Vide - Evora

This morning, stop in Belmonte, today a symbol of Jewish awakening, for a visit of the JEWISH MUSEUM. Also enjoy an OLIVE OIL TASTING, for which the area is famous. Afternoon break in Castelo de Vide, with time to walk through the Jewish quarter with its white-washed houses and its medieval synagogue. Before arriving in Evora, the cultural centre of southern Portugal and a former royal residence, visit a CORK FACTORY and learn about the many ways this material can be used. (B/D)
8

Evora - Algarve

A massive wall surrounds Evora's medieval centre, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Follow your Local Guide on a walking tour through its narrow alleys to the Roman Temple, the early gothic CATHEDRAL/ Portas de Moura fountain, and SAO FRANCISCO CHURCH. Visit the OSSUARY CHAPEL/ whose walls are covered with thousands of human bones and skulls. Next, proceed across the arid Alentejo plain to the Algarve, Portugal's most popular holiday area, and check in to your hotel with rooms overlooking the ocean. Tonight, why not try one of the seafood restaurants for which the Algarve is famous? (B)
9

Algarve Coastal Excursion

Highlight today is a visit to the wind-swept PROMONTORY OF SAGRES, where Henry the Navigator lived and planned his overseas expansion. Only a few kilometres away is Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern corner of continental Europe, a dramatic cliff defying the waves of an ever-angry Atlantic Ocean. Time in pretty Lagos before returning to your hotel. (B)
10

Algarve - Azeitao - Lisbon

Take the scenic route over the Serra da Arrabida and savour sweeping views of the Troia Peninsula. Catch glimpses of the castle at Sesimbra, which recall fierce medieval battles between Christians and Moors and stop in Azeitao to visit a traditional TILE WORKSHOP. After crossing the Bridge of April 25th, you're back in Lisbon. Tonight, enjoy a spectacular panoramic view at Varanda restaurant while having a cocktail and a special farewell dinner with wine with your travelling companions. (B/D)

The accommodation throughout was excellent with spacious twin rooms. Breakfasts in all of the hotels was of a good standard. The coach provided was very comfortable and the driver was pleasant and skilled. Out tour director was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and very enthusiastic in showing us his country. We all learnt a great deal from the tour director ( Rui ) as he was able to answer any queries and questions put to him. He was at all times jovial, gracious and inclusive with all passengers.

Schedules were all adhered to and the days itinerary was presented and explained to us prior to departure or on the bus as we left for the day. Rui was very concerned with client comfort and went out of his way to point out amenities required along the route and offered a variety of suggestions for our free time. The local city guides were also pleasant and knowledgeable and provided us with plenty of local information, history and anecdotes.

This is an excellent way to see Portugal. The Tour Guide was very informative, if anything he spoke a little too much. The accommodation was very good some of the hotels were 5 star, not expected for the price of the tour.
The tour was excellent value for money and went at a very comfortable pace.

Overall the tour was very good. The tour guide Rui was excellent - his personality suited the job. He was v knowledgeable, patient and responsive. We enjoyed his company and the group awarded him a medal for his efforts. The hotels were mostly good a couple in Oporto and the Algarve did not have air circulation or air conditioning and we had a few hot nights!

From the itinerary description we thought we would see Sintra (the brochure said Sintra district) but did not which was disappointing. Luckily we stayed on and saw Pena palace etc later. The tour group was larger than we expected but it was very well managed by Rui the tour guide. We enjoyed our holiday.

Our tour started in Lisbon on 29 June which was a perfect time as the weather was just perfect. We had no rain on our whole trip and saw some amazing places. Our Tour Guide, Uri, was very helpful especially as one of our travellers had a back problem and couldn't visit all the places so Uri just organised for her to rest up at a lovely spot so that she could take in the atmosphere at least.

We met some travellers from other parts of Australia, the UK, and America so it was a varied group and the coach was so comfortable and fitted with Wifi so easy to keep in touch with family at home. My favourite place was probably Lagos on the way to the Algarve and we could have just stay there for days and days but unfortunately we had to move on to the Algarve instead which was equally enjoyable too.

We enjoyed our trip travelling around Portugal with Globus. Our hotels were great and centrally located. Our tour guide, Pedro , was very organised and knew when we needed to get to a place early to avoid all the other tour groups. We had many nationalities on our trip, but all good fun to be with (only one other Australian). We particularly liked Lisbon with it's history of different cultures and it's many places to eat.
