If Europe is on your list but your partner can’t get the time off, your friends haven’t caught the travel bug yet, or your family hasn’t decided on the next family vacation, then why not go it solo? Travelling solo can be liberating and enriching, and Europe is the perfect place to do it.

There are more solo travellers working their way across the globe, and particularly through Europe. Rest assured, you certainly will not be alone! Many solo travellers of all ages are choosing to take a tour for the perfect mix of independence and support, and while touring means a lot is already taken care of, there are still some things to consider before you set off on your holiday and while you are away. Here are some tips for your solo exploration of Europe.

Do your research

As with most things, preparation is key. If you are travelling solo, it is important to research the places you are going so that you feel comfortable and at ease throughout your holiday. Explore the cultural protocols and dress codes of the countries and sites you are visiting so that you can avoid any awkward faux pas and read up on common annoyances other travellers may have encountered. It is also handy to learn some of the local language – it can break the ice and make it easier to interact with the locals. Naturally your guide on tour will be able to help you navigate the cultural etiquettes and translate where necessary, but for those times when you are off exploring alone, it is best to be prepared.

Take a Tour

There are so many reasons to tour as a solo traveller. Taking a tour means you will have the independence and freedom that comes with travelling solo, and the security and support of being on a guided tour. You will get the opportunity to meet likeminded people to share experiences with and have a guide to give you an insight into the local life. You can spend your time exploring the sights, enjoying traditional cuisine, immersing yourself in the unique cultures and learning about the history of a region while someone else takes care of the logistics.

Travel light

Travelling solo is easy but carrying a lot of luggage isn’t! Europe can be particularly challenging – those charming cobbled streets are a bit testing for wheeled suitcases, so it is important to pack lightly enough that you can lift your bag when necessary or choose one with straps, so you can pop it on your back. A lot of European hotels are not equipped with lifts, and often you won’t find them in train stations either. While you are likely to find everyone very helpful and porters obliging, err on the side of caution and pack only what you can carry. Refer to your trip notes to see if porterage is included on your tour and check the luggage restrictions and recommendations for your itinerary.

Be prepared

With independence comes responsibility. Make sure you are equipped with everything you need, particularly when it comes to money matters. Carry cash and credit cards in separate places, so that you always have some finances at your disposal. Leave a copy of your travel documents at home with someone you trust and email a scanned copy to yourself should you need it while you are away. Look into internet and network access before you set off so that you can get in contact if you need and download any useful apps or maps for your journey. Your guide will provide their contact details on tour, so keep a copy on you as well as any emergency contact details that you may need, including your travel insurance company.

Interact with others

Being surrounded by strangers can be daunting, but it is also exciting. You will get the chance to meet many interesting people, all with their own stories to tell and experiences to share. Travelling solo gives you that extra push, whereas travelling with those you know often means you tend to stick to the familiar. Interact with the locals to learn about their culture and traditions. Get to know other travellers, share special moments, and exchange tips and tricks for the journey. Chat to people you wouldn’t normally to enhance your experience.

Choose your rooming

Travelling solo on a tour presents a common question – to share a room or opt for private facilities? This comes down to personal preference and what you are hoping to get out of your experience. It is worth noting that rooms in Europe are generally smaller than ones you will find at home. Sharing a room means that you will automatically have a likeminded ‘buddy’ and gives you the opportunity to form a unique bond. However, if you want some privacy and your own space at the end of the day’s sightseeing, then you can choose to upgrade to private facilities – most tour operators offer this option for solos.

Trust your instincts

The world is a safe place, and whether you are at home or abroad it is all about trusting your instincts and using your common sense. Don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from travelling on your own. When you are away don't let it keep you confined to your hotel, or only eating in the cafes on the same block. Venture further afield, enjoy meeting new people and getting out of your comfort zone to do those things that you wanted to do on your European holiday. Like at home, just be mindful of your surrounds and trust your gut if things don’t feel right. Revel in the sense of fulfillment you will experience from stepping out confidently into new places and experiences.
