Arrive Broome
Arrive in Broome and be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy your day at leisure to explore this fascinating place. Head to the Sunset Bar and Grill at your resort to see one of Australia’s best sunsets over Cable Beach. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner before your journey commences. Stay: Broome, Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa (D)
2
Gibb River Road, Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek
Your day starts with a visit to the fascinating Boab Prison Tree. Believed to be more than 1,500 years old and measuring an incredible 14 metres in diameter, this remarkable tree was once used by early police patrols as a standing point for prisoners as they were walked to Derby. Today, the hollow tree is a registered Indigenous site of great cultural significance. Continue your journey along the Gibb River Road, a remote 660-kilometre outback highway stretching between Broome and Kununurra. The ‘Gibb’ traverses the wild heart of the Kimberley, passing spectacular landscapes of intensely coloured ranges, dramatic gorges, deep rock pools and spectacular waterfalls. Turn off to Bandilngan Windjana Gorge National Park to visit Windjana Gorge, where sheer cliffs tower above glistening white sands. Admire the ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls and scour the banks for freshwater crocodiles. Continue on to Dimalurru Tunnel Creek National Park and explore Tunnel Creek. With torch in hand, wade through the cool waters that fill the tunnel and emerge on the other side to the sight of a tranquil and stunning oasis. Later, arrive at Fitzroy Crossing. Stay: Fitzroy Crossing, Fitzroy River Lodge (B/L/D)
3
Geikie Gorge, Halls Creek, Purnululu National Park
Travel to Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park and explore magnificent Geikie Gorge. Flooding of the river has bleached the walls white over time - an intriguing sight that makes it popular with photographers. Board a unique cruise along the stunning gorge and learn more about the beautiful flora and fauna of this spectacular region. Enjoy a visit to Halls Creek, before travelling to the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park. Experience the first of three APT exclusive Wilderness Lodges as you settle into the tranquil ambience of the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, located in the heart of this stunning national park. Enjoy a delicious dinner with your fellow guests tonight. Stay Two Nights: Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge (B/L/D)
4
Purnululu National Park, Piccaninny Creek, Cathedral Gorge
Explore the magic of Purnululu National Park for yourself and discover the depth of the Bungle Bungle Range. The park is home to the famed black and orange striped domes, ascending to 578 metres above sea level. Standing over a grass-covered plain, steep cliffs form the western face. Created by the constant erosion of river movements over a staggering 20 million years, the range has both geological and Indigenous cultural significance. It is an imposing sight and one that you are sure to remember forever. Take a walk along Piccaninny Creek, a winding gorge within the unique orange and black striped domes. Marvel at the majestic beehive domes as your guide brings the natural history of the range to life. Your next stop is the natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Gorge, a spacious cavern where the acoustics are astounding. You may like to experience an optional scenic helicopter flight over the domes (own expense). This evening, enjoy drinks as the sun sets over the striking dome formations of the iconic Bungle Bungle massif. (B/L/D)

Signature Experiences:
  • After a day’s exploration of the Bungle Bungle Range, enjoy drinks as the sun sets over the striking beehive domes.
5
Echidna Chasm, Kununurra
Join a hike with your Driver-Guide along a Livistona palm-fringed trail into Echidna Chasm, a spectacular natural cleft in the rock. Stay Two Nights: Kununurra Country Club Resort (B/L/D)
6
Lake Argyle, Ord River, Kununurra
Travel to the majestic Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the Southern Hemisphere. Join an unforgettable wildlife cruise on the mighty Ord River. From a modern shaded vessel, discover a fascinating ecological system that has developed from the damming of the Ord River at two locations. Later, enjoy sunset while cruising on Lake Kununurra. This evening enjoy dinner and relax within the surrounds of your hotel. (B/L/D)
7
Parry’s Lagoon, Wyndham, El Questro
Visit the serene Parry’s Lagoon, where you may see an array of birdlife. Head to Wyndham and view the breathtaking Cambridge Gulf from the spectacular Five Rivers Lookout. After a hearty breakfast, continue to explore remarkable El Questro before enjoying lunch. Hike to the picturesque Emma Gorge and be rewarded with a revitalising swim beneath a towering droplet waterfall. Cross the mighty Pentecost River into iconic Home Valley Station, an immense cattle property. Discover the spellbinding scenery that captivated audiences in Baz Luhrmann’s movie ‘Australia’, including the imposing yet strikingly beautiful Cockburn Range. At the viewing area, you will savour this inspirational setting with sunset drinks, as you gaze out to the ever-changing colours of the Cockburn Range as the sun retreats. Stay: Home Valley Station (B/L/D)

Signature Experiences:
  • Soak in the delectable hot pools of Zebedee Springs and leave feeling revitalised.
9
Gibb River Road, Mitchell Plateau

Along the way, stop at Drysdale River Station for lunch. Afterwards, enter a remote world of Livistona palm forests, beautiful lookouts, magnificent waterfalls and isolated swimming holes. For the next two nights, experience APT’s Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge, with its impressive Ungolan Pavilion. In the heart of the Mitchell Plateau, your accommodation is perfectly positioned beside the Pandanus palm-fringed Camp Creek, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip. Perhaps unwind as the sun sets, then later this evening, be treated to a tantalising dinner that showcases the region’s finest local produce. For the perfect accompaniment to your meal, a election of flavoursome beers from Matso’s Broome Brewery and wines from Rosabrook Estate are available for purchase. Stay Two Nights: Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge (B/L/D)
10
Mitchell Falls
Today you have a full day to discover the beauty of Mitchell Falls, with its magnificent tiered waterfalls and Indigenous rock art. When available, local Indigenous guides will join the adventure, imparting their knowledge of the area and sharing their cultural beliefs. Begin with a guided hike to Little Mertens Falls to view rarely seen rock art. Continue to Big Mertens Falls before arriving at the incredible Mitchell Falls. Enjoy the superb scenery as you swim in the pools above the falls, spotting some of the region’s abundant wildlife. Take an included helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls and the surrounding wilderness back to your 4WD vehicle (or if you prefer, hike back with your guide). Longer helicopter flights over this captivating and remote coastline are available at an additional expense. Later, it’s time to return to your wilderness lodge to relax, and enjoy a gourmet dinner. After dinner, spend some time in the lounge recounting today’s tales. (B/L/D)

Admire fascinating rock art and swim in the clear waters at King Edward River. Cross the beautiful Drysdale River and arrive at Drysdale River Station, where you will enjoy a unique stay at this historic cattle property, including a delicious dinner. Look out for the region’s bird life and enjoy a refreshing swim in the pristine water under paperbarks. Continue to Galvans Gorge. Here a short walk leads to a picturesque waterhole where boab trees cling to the escarpment above and you can take a leisurely swim. Later, arrive at Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge in time for dinner, which will become your home for the next two nights. This remarkable lodge is situated in an enviable position, with a sprawling lawn to relax and unwind, while offering stunning views of the King Leopold Range. This holiday went well. We were surprised at how early we had to book to secure a place, but Jemma from Global Journeys made it all happen including a one dayer to Horizontal Falls, which we would recommend as the APT tour doesn't go there. Our flights, accommodation and tours all melded nicely together resulting in a hassle-free holiday, thanks to Jemma.

A lot of the 3200 km of driving was on unsealed roads and the corrugations were significant. We went through quite a few creek beds, often containing a fair bit of water. Accommodation was about as good as could be expected, but the Glamping components were pretty cold at night. Meals were especially good at the wilderness lodges. The scenery was mighty! We have been to many US national Parks and the Kimberley outshines them. However, unlike the US ones, which are relatively easy to access, a lot of the ones on this tour require some fairly tough hiking. If you can afford it, do the helicopter at the Bungle Bungles.

Accommodation in Broome was really good - only thing that needs to be put right was there was no mini bar in the rooms the APT groups were accommodated in. When I enquired at the front desk, they had no idea. The APT trip was very good, most accommodation was excellent. The Lodge at the Bungle Bungles needs to be upgraded, it was VERY cold in the tents and overnight temperatures were down to 0 degrees. The information booklet didn’t mention how cold it could get. The eating area was all open to the elements (I understand with the wet season) but they could at least hang roll up blinds on the sides.

Accommodation at all APT lodges was very good, nice staff. Food was overall very good. The wildlife cruise on Ord river was sensational, we could have done without the Wyndham trip, and Zebedee springs were a bit disappointing. All walks have been great, especially Echidna Chasm, Bungle Bungle walk, Emma Gorge, and Bell Gorge. Too much driving from Home Valley Station to Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge. All in all a great experience with a great bunch of people.

We loved all of it. A highlight was the Tunnel Creek walk, with the assistance of two indigenous guides. They did a great job. The trip went without a hitch, except for one flat tyre. Not bad for 20 of us.

Our Kimberley tour was exceptional. The area is stunning with fabulous rivers, waterfalls, scenery and weather. The accommodation and tour arrangements generally were great, meals very good although we put on a bit of weight. Walking in to some of the brilliant spots was a bit taxing but most definitely worthwhile to see such marvellous sites. We have traveled to places around the world, but would recommend the Kimberley trip to anyone who wishes to see some of the most magnificent places in the world. Global Journeys provided us with a great platform to do this trip. Thanks Madeline!
