Overview

Read 24 reviews and enjoy exclusive savings on AAT Kings 6 Day Tassie's Wilderness Icons. Tasmania may be Australia’s smallest state, but it packs a big punch when it comes to natural attractions. World Heritage-listed wilderness areas, unpeopled valleys, mirror-like lakes and dramatic mountains all await on this Tasmania tour from Hobart.

Itinerary

At the mouth of the River Derwent, Australia's southernmost city embraces its history, but has one eye firmly planted on the future. Put your destination into perspective from the summit of Mt. Nelson, offering a dreamy outlook over the Tassie capital. Step back in time once again at Battery Point, settled as a defensive outpost in the 19th century.

You only need to visit Salamanca Place, the backdrop of epic Saturday markets, to see how forward-thinking purveyors and curators have transformed heritage spaces into restaurants, cafés and galleries. Gaze over boats at Constitution Dock - this is where yachts finish when competing in the annual Sydney to Hobart race, and take a stroll in the second oldest Botanical Gardens in Australia with its amazing collection of plants from around the world. Tonight, join your Travel Director for a Welcome Dinner. (D) Stay: Best Western Hobart

Not many people live in the West of Tasmania - even less visit. This is not for want of appeal. Mount Field National Park dials up the drama from the moment you arrive, delivering World Heritage listed wilderness in the form of soaring eucalypts (some of the tallest on Earth) and thundering waterfalls. Russell Falls will take your breath away in more ways than one.

And just when you think nature couldn't get any more humbling, you arrive at Lake St. Clair, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia. It's one of numerous waterways breaking your path to Strahan, gateway to World Heritage listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. (B/D) Stay: Strahan Village

The inky waters of the Gordon River - given its colour by amber button-grass tannins - are as eery as they are beautiful, the mirror-like surface only broken by your Gordon River chariot as you cruise through Hells Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour before returning to Sarah Island. It's hard to reconcile the beauty of this part of the state with its grim history as a penal colony; a place where convicts would fell Huon pines for boat building.

Disembark at Heritage Landing to view one of these 500-year-old majestic trees. Safely back on dry land, it's soon time to discover 'The Ship That Never Was', the dramatic and hilarious true story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island! You'll see it performed live by a group of theatre professionals. (B/L/D) Stay: Strahan Village

Today your journey reaches new heights - quite literally with a visit to the 1,545-metre Cradle Mountain, your backdrop as you explore Dove Lake on your Cradle Mountain tour, the wild alpine moorlands here a natural magnet for lovers of the wilderness. The spectacular and pristine wilderness of Cradle Mountain is home to the mysterious and secretive Tasmanian Devil.

You'll love the next adventure today with a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. A Day Keeper at Devils @ Cradle will lead you through the sanctuary and provide you with a thorough insight into its operation. When joining this tour you will be directly supporting these animals and threatened species conservation. Leave the Central Highlands this afternoon, and head towards the scenic north-west coast for your overnight stay. (B/L/D) Stay: Beachfront Voyager Motor Inn

Table Cape is by far Wynyard's most remarkable natural wonder, at 180 metres high, 'The Cape' - as locals refer to it - offers spectacular views of Tasmania's coastline. As you drive to the top of the remains of a 12-million-year-old volcano you'll reach Table Cape lookout where, on a clear day, you can see mountain ranges over 175 kilometres away. If there's a town with a cuter name than Penguin, we're yet to find it. Locals embrace its appeal - there are penguin sculptures at every turn, including one measuring over 3 metres tall.

Your journey along the northwest coast also passes through Ulverstone and Sheffield, The Town of Murals, boasting over 100 large paintings depicting the area's rich history and local characters. All this exploring builds an appetite. Refuel at Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm, where happy cows contribute to award-winning cheeses - everything from cheddar and red Leicester to creamy Tasmanian blue. (B) Stay: Best Western Plus Launceston

There are few places in the world where you can leave the city behind and within minutes be amid an immense wilderness area. Launceston is one. Blink and you're at Cataract Gorge, a yawning chasm carved by ancient rivers. This rare natural phenomenon unites bushland with neat Victorian gardens, replete with ferns and exotic plants. Get a different perspective of the green cavern on the optional scenic chairlift, zipping you over the water to a lofty lookout.

You won't want your time here to come to an end; it's a good thing you have afternoon options. Perhaps linger in Launceston's pretty streets, or get a taste for the region on a Tamar Valley wine tour. How you end your Tasmanian tour is completely up to you. (B)

6 Day Tasmania Tour 1 , Hong Kong, Dec 2018
I had booked AAT Kings' Tasmania tour (6 day tour from 29 Dec 18 to 3 Jan 19) through Jemma of Global Journeys. I was impressed by Jemma's efficiency and professionalism.

My husband and I had an enjoyable holiday in Tasmania, however, if AAT Kings could make more of an effort on the following items, it would enhance and sustain its brand and image.

1) ...read more Ensure accuracy of its documents prior to being sent to its customers (I needed to send an email to Jemma prior to the commencement of the trip and requested confirmation on the pick up venue on first day of the tour).

2) Incorrect information listed on the documents resulted in 4 customers being unable to assemble at the correct pick up venue (Travelodge Hobart) at 2:00 pm on the first day of the tour, so they missed out on visiting 2 spots and the driver needed to drive back to the Travelodge to pick them up. This incident shortened our time for sightseeing (visited Hobart's down town...) as the welcome drinks started at 6:00 pm.

3) Time for bag collection was at 7:00 am (4 days) and 8:00 am (1 day), the former collection time gave us discomfort as we needed to wake up at 6:00 am at the latest so as to meet AAT Kings' request. We needed rest on our holiday, however, this request put us under pressure ...

4) Most of the hotel accommodation arranged was pretty good except "Travelodge", the grading of the motel does not meet AAT Kings' brand.

Most of the food arranged together with service rendered by the Travel Director and Driver were good.

I would consider both Global Journeys and AAT Kings in the future as they offer value for money.
Tassie's Wilderness Icons   1 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2018
This was our second trip with Global Journeys and AAT Kings. Booking was easy. The trip was fantastic and we travelled on a brand new coach. Both the driver and tour coordinator were friendly and helpful. Carolyn shared her knowledge about the area we travelled and you could tell she just loved her job. Hotel accommodation was far beyond our expectations ...read more especially Tall Timbers Smithton. Staff were always friendly and helpful as were all tour guides. All inclusions were great as were the optional extras. Being the first tour of the season we had a small group all of whom were friendly and easy to get along with. Even the weather played its part and only rained one day. Saw fantastic sights. Would recommend this tour.
West Tasmania trip 0 , QLD, Australia, Mar 2018
Gordon River cruise operator excellent from start to finish - best day, experienced crew, good meal on catamaran and knowledgeable guide.
Tassy West Coast 0 , Victoria, Oakleigh, Apr 2017
Hobart to Launceston on the AAT King coach. The organisation on the coach was great as this was our first time on this type of holiday. Especially like the rotating seat allocation. The west coast of Tassy was well worth a visit, especially the Gordon River cruise. Accommodation varied but clean and comfortable. The communication about arrangements ...read more and times was excellent. The tour broke up the day into achievable sitting and leaving the coach for sights etc except for a couple of 2 - 2.5 hour journeys that were a bit long at times.
Wonderful 6 day wilderness Tassie escape 0 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2016
Beautiful stops on this 6 day trip to iconic places in Tassie. Very efficient helpful knowledgeable driver and tour director. Quite q full coach of 42 people more than what I expected but we managed. Only non positive was the last day optionals which had to be left out as it was in afternoon leaving little time for airport transfer. Loved Cradle mountain ...read more hotel where the a wallabies and joey came to greet us. Beautiful place and it snowed slightly. Great job overall. Will travel with AAT Kings again
Most enjoyable and well organised and run trip 2 , WA, Australia, Apr 2016
Organisation 9/10, our Driver and Tour Director were both professional and helpful. Margaret and Mark are to be complimented. Would we travel with AAT Kings again? Must say Hannah's suggestion we do the smaller version 6 nights was the correct one for our plans. The shifting of seats each day is a must and a good policy. Our fellow travellers were nice ...read more and punctual in returning to the coach. (not always the case). There were two talkers but sharing them around was OK.

We would consider using Global Journeys again and especially if Hannah was available. Her follow up and explanations and research was exceptional. Made online easier than expected. Accommodation at Wrest Point Excellent. Driver excellent. We plan to travel to Europe Aug 2017 if all goes well. Many thanks Hannah and Global Journeys.
