Itinerary

Your in-depth exploration of Japan begins in Tokyo.

On arrival at Narita or Haneda Airport, take a shuttle bus transfer to your centrally located hotel, where you'll join your Travel Director and fellow guests for a Welcome Reception drink and local appetisers. (WR) Stay: New Otani Garden Tower

We launch our City Tour in the old-time entertainment centre of Asakusa, where we'll encounter the Sensoji Buddhist Temple. One of Tokyo's most colourful and popular temples, Sensoji has been rebuilt countless times since it was founded in 628, making it Tokyo's oldest temple site. Strolling down Nakamise next, we immerse ourselves in the sights and sounds of shitamachi (downtown Tokyo), admiring the wooden dolls, colourful chiyogami (origami paper) and traditional Japanese sweets.

We'll ascend Tokyo Skytree, the world's highest free-standing broadcasting tower for panoramic views of the city, then enjoy the rest of the day at leisure or on an Optional Experience where a professional stylist will dress you in a traditional Japanese kimono. (B)

Our first stop today is the Imperial Palace Plaza from where the two bridges that form the entrance to the inner grounds of the Imperial Palace can be viewed. We'll have the opportunity to explore the leafy Imperial Palace East Gardens before continuing our City Tour. At the Tokyo National Museum browse collections of Japanese art, then continue to the Ginza district where we'll learn how to make sushi with a Local Specialist. We venture to the Five Lakes District next, keeping a keen eye out for the UNESCO listed Mt. Fuji which dominates the landscape. (B/L/D) Stay: Fuji Marriott Yamanakako

Visit Oshino Hakkai, a small rural village in the Fuji Five Lakes district, renowned for eight natural spring water ponds that are fed by melted snow from Mt. Fuji. Admire the reflections of the sky and landscapes in its clear waters, then ascend Mt. Fuji by road to 2,300 metres at the 5th station. Ride up Mt. Tenjo on the Kachikachiyama Ropeway next, for jaw-dropping views (weather permitting) of Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko. Then, journey through the Japanese Alps to the beautiful hillside town of Takayama, before enjoying dinner at the hotel. (B/D) Stay: Associa Takayama Resort

Immerse yourself in tradition as you walk through the Edo-style streets of Takayama's Old Town. Indulge a lunch of Japanese Hida-gyu – beef from a black-haired Japanese cattle breed, renowned as one of the finest quality varieties of beef. Journey back in time this afternoon during a visit to the peaceful UNESCO-listed Gokayama, a mountain village set amidst five valleys. Admire the unique construction of the local Gassho-zukuri wooden houses that have been built without the use of nails with steeply sloped thatched roofs to prevent snow from building up on them.

Next, meet a local family in one of these houses to observe local artisans making washi paper and trying your hand at making your own. Make a difference to the sustainability of this small business during this MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. Stay overnight in Kanazawa. (B/L) Stay: Kanazawa Tokyu

Join a Local Specialist this morning to learn the secrets of painting gold leaf, a delicate craft the Japanese have been perfecting since the 16th century. Continue to the tranquil gardens of Kenrokuen, which took shape over a hundred years to emerge as one of Japan's most beautiful gardens. Connecting with your exquisite natural surrounds, you'll stroll through ornate landscapes and past ponds and temples. Take a short walk through the Omicho market next to see the local fish catch and enjoy an insider's view of everyday life in a busy coastal town.

Then, visit the Nagamachi District with its beautifully preserved samurai houses that line the traditional stone streets. Here you will gain first-hand insights into samurai life during a visit to the Nomura house, an elegant samurai mansion. (B)

We board an Express train this morning to Kyoto, where we'll Connect With Locals at a traditional ryokan, built in 1932 to serve as the second residence of Emperor Akihito's uncle. We'll enjoy a Be My Guest lunch and learn about local Japanese customs as our hosts welcome us into their beautiful home. After lunch, we visit the UNESCO-listed Kinkakuji Temple with its famous Kinkaku (Golden Pavilion), the proud symbol of Kyoto and a Zen temple, which has its origins as a 14th-century villa. (B/BMG) Stay: Nikko Princess

The blazing orange torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine guide our path through the forest, up into the mountains and to a sacred site that has heard prayers for prosperity and happiness since the 8th century. We continue to Sanjusangen-do Hall and admire the minute detail of each of its 1,001 “thousand-handed” goddesses of mercy statues, then enjoy a walking tour of the Gion area.

This evening, we indulge in a Farewell Dinner with your Travel Director and fellow guests. (B/FD)

Our encounter with Japan's age-old traditions and modern cityscapes at its end, we take a transfer by airport shuttle service to Kansai International Airport or Osaka Itami Airport for our onward flight. Alternatively, continue to Hiroshima by choosing the 13 day Splendours of Japan with Hiroshima itinerary. (B)

Lovely japan 1 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2023
The first night accommodation at Tokyo was amazing, New Otani. From there on the accommodation was very good. The tour covered everything from food, culture, history and local feel. I can totally recommend this tour to anyone wanting a bit of everything Japan has to offer.
Quick look at Japan 3 , NSW, Australia, Apr 2017
Nine days is a short tour of Japan, especially as the first and last days are travel days. The tour was well organised and well paced with a balance of planned activities and free time - especially in the centres of Tokyo and Kyoto. The guide was helpful and accommodating with good local insight. The hotels were great with an excellent level of service ...read more and cleanliness. The tour had a good balance of activities (sushi making, paper making) and visits to temples and sites. The optional activities were mainly dinners and not well attended by the group. As a family of three (15 yr old daughter), it was a great first tour of an interesting and beautiful country - we were lucky enough to be there during cherry blossom time!
Hassle free & well organised 3 , WA, Australia, Apr 2017
The best season to visit Japan. The tour director was very friendly, caring & helpful. Clean hotels & bathrooms, and hotels had easy access to shops. Nice to meet some friends during the tour, I will definitely will book my guided tours with Trafalgar. Global Journeys is highly trusted & I'd recommend for the booking of holidays.
Disappointing Trafalgar Tour 3 , NSW, Australia, Mar 2017
Very happy with Global Journeys, Georgie was very helpful and very patient with our booking. Unfortunately we are very disappointed with Trafalgar itinerary! It started with a nice welcome reception... but then it started to go downhill!
The reason we booked with Trafalgar is that we believed they do the research and put the energy to put together ...read more something special ! That's why we paid more to get a better service! Unfortunately Trafalgar was not up to standard this time, so many little things that need a great improvement. Every visit seemed to be rushed. We didn't even have a single tour guide for any cities we went to get an in depth history of the town. Very poor itinerary. It was mainly seeing temples.

While we were there there was sumo fighting and also Geisha dancing on and there was not even a mention of it to see if we wanted to have that as an optional or even a pamphlet to see if we wanted to do that on our own time!
I think the tour leader should have this information in advance and share it with the travelers! They are the ones who need to do the research before hand as they are familiar with seasonal programs! Food experiences were ok , till the end where we went to Ninja restaurant and all the waiters were confused! Which made the last night of being together not as enjoyable! On the other hand we truly enjoyed the company of our group mates, that made us really happy to meet amazing people from all around the world :) and that's what we take from this trip :) looking forward to more bookings with Global Journeys.
Excellent trip 3 , VIC, Australia, Dec 2016
The trip had an overall excellent itinerary, especially for those who enjoy both the scenery of large cities as well as the countryside of Japan. The booking made through Global Journeys was initially somewhat disjointed when my agent left and was replaced with another. However, once the trip was underway, everything sailed smoothly.
Relaxing trip 4 , QLD, Australia, Mar 2016
Overall, it was a good experience. We met some interesting people on the trip. Tour director Coco was amazing. She was extremely patient (even when there was a particularly annoying/ difficult co-passenger). The places we visited had a good mix of temples, castles, art, local activity/cuisine etc. We got tired of the castles towards the end of the trip. ...read more The cherry blossoms were not in full bloom as expected. The pace of the trip was good. Some of us decided to explore more places outside of the tour times (took local trains, went to Tokyo tower, Shibuya station and Harajuku - not covered in the trip). What was really disappointing was the false information about bullet train journey and another visit to a particular place on day 2. Trafalgar kept the incorrect information in the itinerary for an entire year! There is no point keep misleading information. Most of the meals were catered to, the rest we bought on our own. If you happen to be someone who does not enjoy authentic Japanese food, does not like exploring new foods or plain dislike carbs, I would suggest you pre purchase meals. This is meant to be an overall cultural experience but we had some people on the tour craving western food every day. We were keen to try different foods and tried to soak up the entire experience. Learning basic phrases in Japanese came in very handy.
