Arrive In Tokyo

Welcome to Tokyo! On arrival, we will be met and transferred to our hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure before this evening's group welcome dinner. (D)


An exciting day exploring one of the world's largest and most cosmopolitan cities. Our sightseeing includes the Edo Tokyo Museum, Asakusa Kannon Temple, Nakamise, and the famous Sumo Museum, dedicated to Japan's national sport. (B/L)

Tokyo - Hakone

We begin our morning with a stroll through the beautiful Hamarikyu Garden. We visit the famous shrine of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and the Great Buddha (Koutokuin), on the way to Kamakura, the site of the first samurai government. In the early afternoon we travel to Hakone, where the rest of the day is at leisure. (B/D) Special Experience: For the next two nights, we stay in an authentic ryokan guesthouse! We'll have the chance to bathe in natural hot springs and enjoy a traditional Japanese dinner.

Mt Fuji

A highlight of any trip to Japan is a visit to majestic and iconic Mt Fuji! We stop at the fifth station (weather permitting) to take in the stunning views of the surrounding area. Later we'll enjoy a ride on the Komagatake Ropeway to enjoy magnificent vistas of the volcanic Hakone Mountains, Mt Fuji and Sagami Bay. (B/D)

Hakone - Nagano - Yudanaka Onsen

After breakfast, we travel by train from Nagano to tranquil Yudanaka Onsen (Hot Springs).Special Experience: We'll visit Jigokudani Yaen Koen in the Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park and see the famous snow monkeys bathing in the hot springs!The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. (B/D)

Yudanaka Onsen - Takayama - Kanazawa

On our way to Takayama, we visit Zenko-Ji Temple and Yoshimitsu's Temple. In Takayama we'll wander the streets of the old town and then continue to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site of Shirakawago, with its famous gassho-zukuri - 'like hands in prayer' - thatched roofs, designed to withstand the massive snowfalls in winter. (B)


We explore one of Japan's most beautiful gardens, Kenroku-en Garden. Once part of the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle, it features stunning ponds, streams, waterfalls, bridges and tea houses. Later we'll visit Nagamachi Buke Yashiki, a samurai house complete with samurai residents, earthen walls, narrow lanes and canals. (B/L)

Kanazawa - Kyoto

Travelling by bullet train, we make our way to historic Kyoto, Japan's cultural capital. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure for you to explore this lovely city at your own pace. (B)


We experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony this morning, before visiting the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Buddhist sanctuary of Enryakuji Temple. Located on the sacred mountain of Mt Hiei, it offers beautiful views over Kansai. Here we'll enjoy a traditional Buddhist lunch. (B/L)


Today we discover the art of creating Japan's unique crafts and culinary delights. Think fan making, sweet making, sake brewing and tasting! (B)

Kyoto - Sapporo

We fly to Sapporo on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Famous for ramen, beer and its annual Snow Festival, it was also host to the 1972 Winter Olympic Games. Arriving in the afternoon, we spend the remainder of the day at leisure. (B)


Our day begins with an orientation tour of the city. Highlights include the Clock Tower, Hokkaido Shrine and Odori Park. Then we'll stop to enjoy a traditional local lunch. (B/L) Special Experience: This afternoon we head to the Sapporo Snow Festival and discover all the delights on offer, including the amazing ice sculptures that line the city!


Today is at leisure. Why not return to the Snow Festival to explore more of this winter wonderland before rejoining the group this evening for a traditional Japanese farewell dinner. (B/D)

  • Visit Nagamachi Buke Yashiki in Kanazawa and feel the nostalgia for Samurai life as we stroll through the narrow lanes passing remaining samurai residences, earthen walls and private entrances
  • Enjoy a fun filled day in Kyoto as we learn hands on about Japanese fan making, sake brewing, Japanese sweets making and a scholar led stroll through Japanese Gardens
  • Visit the Buddhist sanctuary at Mt Hiei, founded in 788 AD, and one of Japan's most important cultural, religious and artistic centres
