After lunch in a local restaurant, visit the SHANGHAI MUSEUM and the CHILDREN'S PALACE, where talented children study music, dance, and theatre after school. One of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world when China dominated the silk trade, Xi'an today is an archaeological treasure trove. Sightseeing begins with the nearby DAYAN PAGODA, built in 652 AD, followed by a LACQUER WORKSHOP. Next, visit the enormous tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, accidentally discovered by local farmers in 1974. Marvel at the legion of TERRACOTTA WARRIORS that has been guarding the burial site for 2,000 years. During lunch, enjoy a NOODLE-MAKING DEMONSTRATION by a master chef and learn how Chinese noodles are made by hand. The GREAT WALL OF CHINA once stretched 6,437 kilometres (4,000 miles) across China's barren northern terrain from the Bohai Sea to the Gobi Desert. Head north to a village where the Great Wall is well preserved and walk along the wall to enjoy sweeping vistas of this mammoth fortress. Then, visit a CLOISONNE WORKSHOP and see local artisans use the techniques of this ancient art form to turn pieces of copper into colourful decorative items. After lunch in a local restaurant, take a leisurely walk down the SACRED WAY of the Ming Tombs and marvel at the impressive hand-carved stone statues. The mv Victoria Anna is a three-story atrium lobby welcomes guests to a decor blending modern comfort and elegant Asian design. A large sun deck, two lounges, three bars, a gym, library, multiple gift shops, and two elevators complement two restaurants including a main dining room and an à la carte restaurant. All of the ship's generously sized cabins include floor-to-ceiling windows with a glass door opening to a private balcony. The mv Victoria Anna accommodates 226 passengers.
A professional, experienced, English-speaking Cruise Director accompanies every departure. Experienced Local Guides will take you on sightseeing tours of wonderful towns and cities, plus if the schedule permits, you can spend the evening onshore. In addition to fascinating sightseeing on each itinerary, you can choose from a variety of optional excursions, and there's always time to make your own discoveries as well. Back on board, you'll enjoy interactive presentations with local area experts, wine tastings, local entertainment, and much more. Meals are served in the dining room in a single sitting. There is open seating so you may sit at different tables for each meal if you wish to meet other fellow passengers. All meals on board the ship are included.
All meals on board are prepared by accomplished chefs and consist of local food adjusted to suit the tastes of international passengers. There is a buffet breakfast and on the Yangtze, a mix of Western and Chinese dishes are offered. Dinner is a multi-course meal with choice of soups and entrees. Wine, beer & soft drink is included with all onboard dinners. Coffee, tea & soft drinks are included at lunch and dinner.
Dress aboard and on shore is "casual & comfortable". We kindly request that shorts not be warn in the restaurant or lounge in the evenings. Bathing suits are not appropriate in the lounge or restaurant at any time. You may wish to wear something a little dressier for the Captains Dinner. We recommend that for shore excursions you wear comfortable shoes & don't forget a sun hat.
For all European cruises gratuities for your Cruise Director and crew are included in the pricing. Tipping is a way to show your satisfaction for good service and is part of the cruising way of life. Please note we are unable to facilitate pre paid gratuities in Egypt, China or South America.
For convenience, all purchases and paid services on board (after your authorisation) are billed to your personal shipboard account. At the end of your cruise, you will receive a total which can be paid with cash or charged to a major credit card or paid in traveller's cheques (there is a processing fee). Travellers cheques are not accepted on the Royal Lotus. Personal chequest are not accepted.
Avalon Waterways do not take reservations on a "share" basis. Sidestep the single room supplement by travelling with a friend if you can. Single prices are available on request.
