The Fleurieu Peninsula is a picturesque peninsula located south of Adelaide. It was named after a French explorer, by the French explorer Nicolas Baudin as he mapped the south coast in 1802. Victor Harbour - A short tram/pedestrian causeway connects Victor Harbour to Granite Island. The Horse Drawn Tram, one of the very few horse-drawn tram has been in service since 1894. Granite island is home to a large colony of Fairy Penguins which are a popular attraction on the island. These penguins shelter on the island during the day, departing in the evening to hunt for fish before returning in the morning. The Cockle Train historic railway operated by SteamRanger runs steam locomotive services between the Victor Harbor and Goolwa. This route is the oldest rail route in Australia.
Victor Harbor also offers numerous fishing opportunities varying from offshore reefs for larger boat based anglers to excellent surf fishing on the beaches closer to the Murray Mouth. Greenhills Adventure Park has waterslides, canoes, rockwall climbing, archery, mini golf, and go-karting. Victor Harbor is the centre of the surf zone known as the "South Coast" to Adelaide and local surfers.
Cape Jervis - has a rocky shore line with some rocks having a colourful orange moss growing on them. A ferry travels between Cape Jervis, at the tip of the peninsula, and Kangaroo Island. There is fine surfing at Waitpinga. Other towns of interest in the area include the heritage town of Willunga, Mount Compass, Goolwa, Yankalilla, Rapid Bay and the wine region of McLaren Vale. |
