General Touring Questions

Can I book directly with AAT Kings?

AAT Kings is a wholesale Tour Operator and as such do not take direct bookings. Any AAT holidays can be booked through a licenced travel agent like Global Journeys, who can give you the best advice on all of your travel plans.

When will I receive my documents?

Once your tour is fully paid for, we will email your tour itinerary to you so you that have a copy on hand including your arrival instructions. This generally happens around 30-40 days out from your tour start date. On arrival in New Zealand you'll be met at the airport and you'll then receive a receive a smart travel wallet, luggage labels and a useful booklet containing valuable holiday information. Plus, while on tour, you will receive a map of New Zealand as a memento of your special AAT Kings holiday.

Who else will be travelling with me?

Travel with like-minded English speaking people from such countries as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, America and Canada. Our seat rotation policy allows you to mix with fellow travellers and see spectacular landscapes from all angles.

How many people will be on tour with me?

There will be a maximum of 44 people on your coach, however the coach carries an average of just 40 guests.

Will the coach be modern and comfortable?

AAT Kings have a modern luxury coach fleet for both our fully escorted Premium and Low Cost tours. Each coach includes air-conditioning, reclining seats with seatbelts, restrooms, two door access, ample legroom and large panoramic windows. Our seat rotation policy allows you to mix with fellow travellers and see spectacular landscapes from all angles.

I want to see all the main sights, but will I have time to explore on my own?

As well as organising all the ‘must-see’ tour experiences, and ensuring you get to see them in the best possible way, we’ll provide you with the flexibility to do a lot of things the way you want to do them. Whether you’re interested in something adventurous or sedate, a traditional ceremony or a wander round the local region, a multi-day add-on or the day trip du jour, AAT Kings ‘Free Time’ allows you the opportunity to uniquely experience more of the region you’re visiting.

So if mid-holiday something takes your fancy – like white water rafting, sailing or a scenic flight – and you want to add it to your adventure, our optional experiences mean you’re ‘free’ to go for it. Or if you’re feeling more like a quiet day of shopping or lazing by the pool, you’re ‘free’ to do that too!

What are the meals like?

Sample exotic flavours, new ways of dining, fresh local produce and innovative cuisine prepared by talented chefs. Start each day with a healthy, hearty breakfast of hot and cold selections. Most evenings enjoy sumptuous three course dinners or a delicious buffet featuring local delicacies. Lunchtime, you’re generally free to explore the local cuisine or enjoy a light snack while sightseeing.

Do you have a share program for singles?

If you wish to share with another tour member you can advise Global Journeys at the time of booking. AAT Kings believes that traveling solo doesn't have to cost you more. We will try to match you with someone of the same sex in order to avoid having to pay the single supplement. If we are not able to provide a suitable roommate, we will provide a single room at no extra cost.

Do you have a non-smoking policy?

There is a no smoking policy motorcoach touring policy. However, we do make plenty of convenience stops giving you the opportunity to smoke, use local restroom facilities, take a scenic snapshot or just relax and enjoy of cup of coffee.

When is the best time to book a tour to New Zealand?

The short answer is - as early as possible. Global Journeys offer Earlybird Discounts for those visitors that book early. These discounts offer significant savings over the brochure price and are generally not available during the normal busy booking period (September-November).

When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

You can visit New Zealand at any time of the year. Summer and winter temperatures vary by only about 10ºC over most of the country, making New Zealand an ideal holiday destination all year round.

What's the climate like?

New Zealand's seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere. This means that the warmest months are December, January and February, while the coldest are in June, July and August. Don't let cold months put you off - winters tend to be short and generally fairly mild.

What does the tour cost include?

Every tour on our site has its own itinerary page outlining all costs associated with tour. There are no hidden extras. Most meals are included and this is clearly spelt out on the itinerary page. On some of the AAT Low Cost tours there are optional extras available (for example the TranzAlpine Train Journey) that must be booked prior to arrival. Again this is spelt out clearly. Accommodation is always included as is the transport (of course!)

That really depends on where you want to go in Australia, because of its size it spans several climate zones, therefore there are certain times of the year when its best to visit different parts of Australia. The northern states (Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia) are best visited during the Winter months, from June through to September. While the summer months are ideal for visiting the southern states (South Australia, Tasmania and New South Wales). On the whole, September and October are the best, when it is neither too hot nor too cold.

Are Australians friendly to tourists?

We sure are, as long as you don't mind the informality that goes along with that friendliness. We're not intrusive, but most Australians tend to be a little irreverent of authority. Expect to be called "mate" a lot.
