We had never done a 'coach tour' before and didn't know what to expect BUT we really thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We think our Tour Guide (CarolineTipper) and Driver (Tom) were exceptional and really pulled our group together. Caroline is a Tasmania girl and her local knowledge and stories of various places and people really made the trip for us. We had been asked by fellow New Zealanders (before we left) why we were going to Tasmania as it was supposedly quite like New Zealand! We didn't find it so at all. (Ed. I agree!) Tasmania definitely has its very own scenery, history, weather and character. We loved it. Our first 4 or 5 days on Tour experienced fabulous weather - sunny and warm. Unfortunately things then turned to 'custard' and it rained and rained and rained. This caused several roads and bridges on our planned travels to be washed out or unpassable so alternative routes were arranged and this was fine. The difficulties for our Guide must have been considerable. However, we thoroughly enjoyed both Tasmania and our coach tour and would now consider doing a 'coach tour' again. We made various friends within the group and some may visit us here in New Zealand in the future so the social contacts made is another plus!

What a wonderful tour of Tasmania. Ann and I had everything, and it went perfectly, so thank you and Global Journeys for all the help. AAT Kings were brilliant. Nothing was a bother and the driver, Tom and tour director, Peter were simply the best. We enjoyed all and met such an array of people from all over the world. I made two special friends and receive emails from them. I can certainly recommend Global Journeys so keep up the good work and maybe we will catch up with you in the future. All the accommodation was just brilliant as well, so thank you. My pleasure having written these few lines in appreciation.

We had a lovely time in Tasmania. We were very happy with the tour, felt it all ran smoothly - tour guide and driver were excellent. The accommodation wasn't as good as I would have liked but realise it wasn't a top priced tour. We were lucky to have a great group doing the tour. I believe a few of them did their bookings through you. Thank you for your organisation of the tour, it was so easy dealing with you. I liked the way you always responded so promptly.

The Tassie tour I enjoyed very much. Having not been to Tassie before I appreciated what I had missed, the scenery and countyside very attractive. Slight alterations to the tour because of the stormy weather, going to Camphell Town And Ross instead of St. Helens because of road closure [heavy rain] but that didn't detract from the tour. Missed out on the railway trip from Strahan to Queenstown because of track closure due to the storm. The tour very well run with an excellent tour guide and driver and the accommodation was very satisfactory.

Had a great time!! Our bus driver, Tom, was great, really competent and I felt so safe (normally am a nervous passenger)and our tour director, Robin, is so full of information, facts and figures it's scarey!! Every day was an adventure, the accommodation was more than adequate, meals good. Absolutely no complaints. I will certainly be travelling with them again as soon as I can save up the pennies. Thanks to you all for a great trip.

We had a wonderful time in Tassie with AAT Kings. Our Tour Director Robin & Driver Tom were excellent. Our only complaint was with the airlines from the Gold Coast to Hobart & return. My advice to anybody would be to book direct flights. Apart from that the tour was great, very informative, made loads of friends & had many happy days. Thank you for organising the tour.

Thank you Georgina for helping us plan our trip to Tasmania with Global Journeys. We had a really enjoyable time and in the 10 days there we saw so much. The efficiency in the organizing of our day trips, tours, cruises, meals and our very comfortable accommodation was spot on. We made some lovely friends on tour and have recommended Global Journeys to our friends who are looking for a hassle free holiday.

I loved Tasmania. It was a pity that it was pretty cold for the time of year having left Canberra in 37 degrees and arrived in Hobart in 17 degrees which went down to 9 degrees in the mountains, but I guess that is why it is so lush and beautiful. It was a pity that it was never warm enough to even walk on the beaches as the wind was so cold. I was sorry that there was never enough time to stay long enough in any one place; perhaps some of the visits could have been left out. Also arriving in Launceston late afternoon on a Sunday when we were not provided with an evening meal was difficult as most restaurants were closed. With hindsight we should have eaten at the hotel where we were staying. I loved the little penguins, the mountains and temperate rain forest with magnificent trees covered in moss and lichens, the river cruise from Strahan especially the stop at Katherine Island, and the day at Port Arthur. Richmond was an enchanting little town where I could easily live!

The Tour was well organized and everything was up to schedule. The Carolyn Tipper like a guide was perfect. Her deep knowledge Tasmanian history and places we were visiting was overhelming. Thank you for this tour.

I had an absolutely wonderful holiday. The tour guide had an outstanding knowledge of Tasmanian History, including convicts, locals, environment and products. As well as making the tour friendly and offering lots of extra sightseeing stops. Tasmania was beautiful, I had such a wonderful time. I loved the history, the wilderness, and the people both of Tasmania and my fellow travellers. The National Parks in Tasmania are awesome, I want to go back to Tasmania especially to see Cradle Moutain once again.

Had a lovely time touring Tasmanian - saw some wonderful scenery and sights. I wish the group was a little smaller, and although I was told that it will be busy I didn't feel rushed. We stayed in some lovely accomodation and the meals were all great.
Catherine Angeleski (Australia)
Tour Date 04/01/2011
The tour was good and bad. The good included Hobart, Russell Falls, Gordon River Cruise, Cradle Mountain, Stanley, Launceston & Bicheno. The fantastic included Port Arthur, Richmond, Freycinet & Legerwood Memorial. The bad was the cheese factory, Axeman's hall of fame, the junk shop. The absolute pits was Queenstown and for 2 nights!? Such a shame we didn't stay in Strahan especially the night of the cruise as there was theatre relating to Sarah Island. The tour guide was disappointing. Unfriendly, unknowledgeble and repeated instructions incessantly as though we were two year olds. The coach and driver were great.
Catherine Pretorius (Australia)
Tour Date 07/12/2010
There were too many on the tour and because of this we had very little time to take many photos especially when the weather was good. Generally we enjoyed the tour. The coach driver was a very good driver and the guide did her best to keep us happy and informed. We felt the tour covered a lot in the time available and no doubt saw the highlights of Tasmania. Starting the tour and ending the tour at Hobart was good as we could get a direct flight from and to Brisbane. The fellow passengers fitted in very well and we got along with everybody and we all had a good time together. Meals and accommodation were good but arriving in Launceston on the Sunday afternoon was not a good idea as most of the shops and eating places were closed and dinner was not included that day. We would have liked to have spent more time at the gorge near Launceston since very little was open in Launceston and it was a lovely day to have spent more time at the gorge.
Lawrence & Doris Hay (Australia)

This was a good trip with excellent driver (Smilie) and guide (Carolyn). Both were very knowledgeable and provided wonderful commentary on Tasmanian history and the sights we visited. They worked hard to keep each day full of interesting places. We were with an interesting group of seniors who related well and enjoyed the trip.
June & Frank Shoemaker (Canada)

We highly recommend this holiday. A very comprehensive tour with great driver and tour director in a very comfortable coach. Accomodation was clean and comfortable and included meals were generous and delicious.

The tour was purchased on behalf of my parents. They state it is one of the best holidays that they have ever had. Everything was well organised and flowed easy from the airport transfers to the actual tour itself. The coach was first class with an exceptional bus driver and tour guide. All the accommodation was as hoped being clean, comfortable and well positioned. All food was first class. The trip was full on but set at a pace that was easily held to by my aged parents. The trip and Global Journeys have a world class tour and it is highly recommended to anyone.

From the beginning Georgie made booking so easy. Thank you Georgie. Loved Tassie, saw lots, did lots, ate lots. Tour Guide Katherine very knowledgable and left us in no doubt as to what was happening. Driver Peter worked hard. No real complaints but disappointing that the Chancellor Queenstown manager so rude to his staff and some guests. Breakfast staff at Burnie seemed eager for us to move on. Last dinner at Mercure Launceston extremely poor however complaints accepted graciously. Great tour variety, something for everyone. Enjoyed some places so much wanted to go back and see more! Tour end felt a bit bitsy and flat. Would have liked a definite tour finish with opportunity for full group goodbye and thanks to our crew, especially as we had 'lived together' for 10 days. All four of us still buzzing and remembering special moments.

I found that the 10 days Best of Tasmania tour was a great way to see so many of the different but always interesting and beautiful areas of Tasmania. Barbara our Tour Director and Neville our driver were always most helpful and made the trip a safe and happy experience for us all. There was never a dull moment on this tour and I recommend it to anyone wishing to visit Tasmania the easy and trouble free way. A very big thank you is also sent to Georgia Walpole for all her help in organizing this trip for Odette and myself. It has been more then 30 years since we have had a chance to have a holiday together but as our families have all grown up we felt now was the time and we were not disappointed. We both had a great time.
Paula Brookes (Australia)

As far as itinerary went, it would be difficult to have a more complete tour. Enough praise cannot be given also to the tour company, especially the tour director and driver we were given. However, it has come to my attention that AAT Kings is also a member of the Trafalgar/Insight travel group, and as a frequent traveller and member of their discount traveller's club, it would have been better if this had been advised to me.
Andrea Jutson (New Zealand)
Tour Date 30/10/2009
Just the best time. Ted and Pete were absolutely great. We were priviledged to have Teds local knowledge. It was great to have everything planned for us so we didn't have to worry about bookings of hotels etc. The coach was soooo comfy with good views out. I'm a bit nervous that if we did do another holiday it wouldn't be as good as this one was. So thanks ever so much.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the coach be comfortable and modern?

Yes, AAT Kings have one of the newest coach fleets in Australia. Their modern and luxurious Mercedes Benz and Scania coaches are equipped with air conditioning, reclining seats, seatbelts, restrooms, two door access, ample legroom and large panoramic windows, so you won't miss a thing.

What does it mean if I book on a non Guaranteed Departure?

AAT Kings have designated certain departures as Guaranteed Departures, which means they have reached minimum passenger numbers and will definitely run as scheduled. Global Journeys continue to add Guaranteed Departure status to tours online as they achieve minimum numbers. If you book on a non Guaranteed Departure AAT Kings will determine if the tour will operate no later than 6 weeks prior to departure. If the tour is withdrawn we will work to offer you a suitable alternative. If you aren't happy with the options offered any money paid on your booking will be refunded.

What documentation will I receive?

This depends on the touring style you are booking. Short Break bookings will receive e-documentation. If you are booking an AAT Kings escorted tour (Premium, Cost Saver, Explorer or Camping) you will receive paper documents in a complimentary leather travel wallet as well as luggage labels and a useful booklet containing valuable holiday information. You will also receive a map of the region you are visiting when you get on tour.

When will I receive my travel documents?

Documents for AAT Kings guided tours are delivered to the hotel or address you are staying at prior to your tour depending on the tour type chosen. We also provide you with a tour itinerary and arrival instructions by email, once we have all your flight information and personal details.

What is the difference between the different tour types?

To suit all different holiday styles AAT Kings offer a range of different touring types.

  • Premium tours are guided by a Tour Director and Driver and include more luxurious accommodation and facilities, more meals and exclusive dining experiences as well as extra sightseeing and cultural highlights.
  • CostSaver tours are designed to offer value for money with clean and comfortable accommodation, breakfast daily, some dinners and plenty or free time, while also benefiting from an expert Tour Director and Driver throughout.
  • Explorer tours are run in our luxury mini-coach vehicles and average around 20 travellers. These active itineraries explore less accessible locations, stay in a mix of Premium tour standard accommodation and character-filled boutiques and are escorted by a dedicated Driver guide.
  • Short Breaks showcase the highlights of a region or city in a short time, they allow extra flexibility as standalone or pre or post tour options. Short Breaks are run by our expert Driver guides.

Who travels on AAT Kings Tasmania tours?

With such a diverse range of destinations and touring styles there is no set age or type who travel with AAT, you can expect a wide-range of like-minded travellers. Families with children, young couples, baby boomers, solo travellers, small groups and more can be found on our Guided tours. There is certainly no age limit for touring, with children as young as 6 through to seniors travelling, however, the general demographic tends to be over 40. As AAT Kings is sold internationally you will also find that there are people from all over the world on their tours, particularly North Americans, British, Europeans and many Asian nations.

How many other people will I be travelling with?

Depending on the tour you choose and the time of year you are travelling our group sizes can vary from fewer than 21 people up to 50 people, so there is a great opportunity to mingle and make new friends.

Do I need to tip my Tour Director, Driver or Driver guide?

While it’s not compulsory in Australia or New Zealand, tipping is becoming an increasingly accepted practice in all areas of the service industry, but particularly in restaurants, bars and taxis. Likewise on your AAT Kings tour, if you feel that your Tour Director, Driver, Driver guide or Private cook has done an excellent job, then we would recommend tipping up to the equivalent of AU $5 per day. However, it’s not compulsory. It is up to you!

What options do I have if I am travelling alone?

The beauty of travelling with AAT Kings is that you won't be travelling alone. You'll have a group of like-minded travellers and soon to be friends to share in the experience with. They also offer a room matching service on all Guided tours (not applicable on Explorer or Short Breaks) so you don't have to pay a single room supplement. AAT Kings room matching service means they will work to match you with another solo traveller of the same sex but if they can't they will provide a single room at no extra cost.

Can I travel with children on your Guided tours?

Yes, they can accommodate children, however they must be over 6 years of age. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. AAT Kings do recommend that people travelling with children consider whether the itinerary is suitable, in particular the activities involved and the duration of the tour to ensure children’s comfort.

Where can I find out more information on AAT Kings?

We have a dedicated section on our website providing more detailed information on AAT Kings including more FAQ's on what you need to know before, during and after your travel; as well as information on what to expect on tour, and a comprehensive search facility to enable you to easily find more of their tours.
